Found a hitchhiker!!

This little guy appeared out of no where in my aquarium... must have been in one of the rocks hiding...

I only saw what appear to be an ugly spider... since it was in a hole in a rock I could not figure out what it was. Took a few photos and in those I could finally see it was a crab. Still do not know what kind it is...

That is it... it is just so cool to see all this...

can't say I know what kind of crab that is....but he looks kinda mean. If you have any other livestock in the tank, may wanna pull him out and stick him in a breeder net, QT tank, or in the sump, somewhere isolated until you can get a positive I.D. on em. Just to play it safe.

red eyes and pointy claws = bad news. I would isolate it to the sump or fuge. IMO

exactly, thats what fuges are for too :)

try leaning a glass against the rock he's in with a peice of food at the bottom, just make sure its steep enough that he cant climb out,(worked for me once), the other 2 times were wood bbq squirs, stab away

oh, try the glass at night and keep checking it to see if he's in there

It's likely a Xanthid species of crab of some kind. None of them are reef safe as far as I know.

Something fun you might want to consider doing if you dont have a sump or fuge would be to set up a "pest tank" where you put all the critters like this so you don't have to kill them. Pest tanks are a lot of fun to watch... almost as much as a display tank :)

wine carafe with dead shrimp inside, left tilted against rockwork all night. HOpefully he can't climb out. If that fails, try cutting off top of liter bottle, gluing inverted, to act as a harder trap.

I will give this one a try.

Thank you all for your suggestions!! Will keep you posted.

So far nothing is missing, nothing done to any of the fish I have... glad I saw it before it started doing any harm to the other fishes in the tank...

RACC (Reefers Aginst Catichin Crabs) I hate catchin crabs. :p Put it on e-bay and sell it. I like the two liter bottle deal, you can reuse that trap when you get worms.

I don't like killing crabs (unless we are talking about blue crabs, stone crabs, king crabs  )

Anyway, my plan is to keep it in the sump while I setup a second tank...

We got a small crab the other day (my son wanted one)... small and seems harmless... so not against crabs at all... it is just that this one looks mean as heck...

I have the same kind of crab that is hiding in a rock that has one of my LPS corals on it. He's been in there for like 3 months now, and I haven't seen any ill effects. I've tried getting him out like 10 times now. The liter bottle with inverted top, fresh water spray, and wine carafe haven't worked in like 10 tries, but I keep trying.

Let us know if you can get it out.

Well... patience is a virtue...

...that I don't seem to have, lol...

I took out the rock he was hiding in and got it in a 5 gal bucket... was able to get him out with a plastic rod without harming the little guy...

He is now living happy in the sump and everyone else in the tank is happier. Shrimps are moving around more now. Before, I could tell where the crab was because the shrimp stayed in the opposite side of the tank.

Thank you all!!
