Found this little guy at work today in a shipment of live rock from Indonesia. Any Idea as to his ID? (its a cell phone pic...its the best I can do at work)

How big is it? Can you see what color the meral spots are? Does it have a "keel" sticking up on the tail?

Dave,

It is probably a Chorisquilla, but I don't think from what I can see that it is Chorisquilla tweediei. The eyes are the wrong color. Are the eyes red? There are 13 species in this genus and three or four have the characteristic white anterior and posterior markings.

For the record, Chorisquilla is a protosquillid. Cloridopsis is a squillid.

Its about an inch and a half in length. The eyes looked black to me, ill check again tomorrow though. No keel on the telson. Thanks for the help, ill try to get some more pcics and details up tomorrow after work.

Dave,

The key here is probably the shape of the eye (cylindrical or bilobed), the color of the eyes, the nature of the spines on the telson, and the number and shape of the teeth on the telson.

The store was so busy yesterday and today I totally forgot to look at the mantis again. His eyes are oval shaped...That much I remember. I dont work again untill tuesday, ill try to bring in the digital camera and get some better pictures of the telson and eyes then.

The combination of the white bands, black eyes and red meral spots is one that I have not seen before. This is probably an unknown species and it would be great if we could add it to the list of described protosquillids. If the person who bought it is interested, please contact me at rlcaldwell@berkeley.edu. Thanks.

The florida live rock animlal is either Neogonodactylus bredini or wennerae. The only sure way to tell them apart is genetically.

I think the Protosquillid is probably a new species, but we will probably never know.

Roy

Dr. Roy.....if the protosquilla is a new species and we can identify it as that, can we name it after me??? hahahahah jk
