Found a Octopus

Hi I'm pretty new to the hobby but I just received some live rock from a online dealer and I opened the box and found a little ping pong ball sized octopus. I believe it to be a dwarf but am not sure. I'm needing a little advice my tank just got done cycling so its not establish to well and I'm very new to salt water tanks. I have a 29 gallon acrylic tank with a 10 gallon sump, skimmer, and power heads so lots of flow. Any suggestions. Would to much flow be a issue? What temp do they prefer. How about salinity. How much room do they need. I have 45 pounds of live rock as of now with a dsb. How much light is ok. I know they are night time animals? So lots of questions any help would be appreciated. I do have a tightly sealed aquarium so I think it wont escape.
 
How lucky! You should go to Tonmo.com and look at their articles for some more information. Octopus are very sensitive to water conditions, so you are going to have to keep an eye on your ammonia, nitrate and nitrites. They prefer live food like shrimp and crabs, although some octopus will take raw seafood.
 
+1 on TONMO - they definitely know there stuff over there! Personally, since your tank is so new, and because of how sensitive cephs are, combined with the fact that you most likely wouldn't be able to keep any other fish or inverts with him, AND because they are escape artists.... I'd suggest seeing if anyone you know WANTS one and can take him or else take him to a very reputable LFS.

Just my opinion.

Or just ask the folks at TONMO - they'll know what to do. :)
 
I agree with you guys. Id love to keep him and after playing around with him for a while Im a new found fan of them but for the time being Im going to tank him to my local fs. I need to get my tank established and do some more reading up before I take one on. My ignorance is not fair to the octopus. I dont mind single animals I keep piranha to and love the aggressive and more difficult fish but I like to do things the right way. But in other words im starting to build my tank toward keeping one some day. First question will a 29 really be big enough for a dwarf when he gets bigger.
 
It will escape.
It will die in a new tank.
It will eat other fishes shrimps etc.
It will kill you if it is a blue ringed octopus.
 
Thats why its now at the lfs. I don't think mimics are deadly are they. But he told me he'd give me 50 so i guess it will pay for something. Thanks for all the help
 
Thanks for being so responsible about the octopus. I'd be pretty amazed if you had a mimic crawl out of your live rock - but $50 is a pretty good price for a hitchhiker.
 
Yes species that we have in aquarium have 1 or 2 year life span pigme ones have a life span about 6 months.

That was cool. My favorite was the running rock-fish immitation.

It's needs to add 'BP blow-out preventor' to it's list of morphs. That will scare everything away.
 
Hey guys just wanted to touch base. The octopus is still alive and thriving. Hes in a large tank at my lfs. I do not believe he is a mimic. He really is a blast to watch I wish I could have kept him. But just wanted to let you all know how it was going. The rock was from drs foster and smith. Thanks for all your help mike
