I have been in this hobby a long time and know that most if not all aquarium thermometers suck.
I have been using a Cole-Parmer Item# EW-90000-41 digital thermometer for a few years and it seems very accurate. It always reads less than a degree off my Ranco controller. Recently I damaged the wire on it and had to purchase a new one and it reads the same also. They cost $47 it has a water proof probe and comes with an NIST traceable calibration certificate. They are not cheap but it's nice to have something I can trust.
