I've got one in my tank, only really see him at night picking at algae and the rocks. Hasn't bothered anything yet.

I'm guessing it was an acro crab... supposably if they get separated from their colony they die.

There actually was a thread on them in the "Reef Discussion" forum today.

Are these crabs and Emerald Crabs reef safe?

I found one of these in my tank that hitch-hiked in some rock that I bought. He was in my tank for over a year before I found him.

From research that I did and pictures, I came to the conclusion that it was some sort of rock crab. They are very strong (knock over rocks etc.) and generally a nussiance as the will chow on fish and inverts.

Wet web media has some info on this type of crab.

From what I found out, you're better off that its no longer in your tank.

are you sure you didnt find an empty shell they molt just like shrimp do. I thought my emrald crab died also only to see him this morning what i saw was his empty shell

I had a crab that looked a lot like that. Mine was a little darker shell, and red eyes. I had identified him at that time as a red eyed reef crab. Supposedly could be poisonous?? I lost many small fish and he was a suspect. I have also not gotten an rash on my arms when cleaning the tank since his departure....?
