found new lights i want to get next

Darrick...you know that fixture isn't much better than a shoplight. No individual reflectors, just cheap parts thrown together to cash in on the T5 craze. You are better off with you have. They don't make 72" T5's so that is just offset 60" bulbs and a flat reflector.

Spend your money on the real thing otherwise it is just a waste of money.

i figured it was but i'm trying to find a t5 fixture or retro kit for my 125 less heat and save a little on power consumption.

have you seen these?

What I have been doing for a while now is letting the lights run at night when it is cool and not during the day. Mine come on at 3 in the afternoon and go off at midnight. This helps keep the temps down in the tank as well as the front room.

A good T5 fixture will be expensive and let's say you get 8-80 watt bulbs....that is 640 watts of heat and you currently are running 450 watts of heat. A watt is a watt any way you look at it, yes the overall fixture will carry the heat the full length but the power consumption will be equivalent and T5's do get hot.

Run a pedestal fan on the top of the tank and it will keep the temp down.

I would be ditching those. I only run my actintics when I want to take pics. lol The rest of the time it is just a waste of electricity.

i adjust to were pc lights come on at 10am. and halides come on at noon and run halides until 6 p.m. and pc lights go off at 10p.m. Is that an ok time to run them

T5's do not run as hot as Mh watt for watt... i dare you to keep your hand on a 250w mh for 10 sec and then touch an 8 bulb t5 ficture.. no way are they as hot....

Your halides are more efficient than the pc's and I would only run them when you want that color pop. I like running at night as this is also when I am home and can spend more time with the tank lit up.

Pc's are horribly inefficient.

Nice fixture...but what a price tag. yeow!!!

lol not cheap but it has some of the best T5's on the market and add to that mh.. not a bad deal....

Of course not...the halide is a point source heat...all concentrated in one spot and the flourescent is spread out but the heat generated is the same. If you spread out the halides to the same dimension as the t5 or concentrated the t5's in the same amount of space as the halides the heat would be the same. You are still generating the same heat...just more spread out. I have had both and love a real T5 fixture but still prefer halides for growth and color.

I am going to jump up too two 1000w 20k as soon as I can. I also live in MO--haha on the electrical bill!
JJ about the jump on MH and bill!
I would if I could find some info on 1000w 20k bulbs??

Jack you have a chiller now-why are you worried about heat?

d.french that first fixture looks like a piece of you know what.

I would stick with what you have-jmho
good luck

I don't worry about heat, it isn't an issue and the chiller rarely comes on. I do however want to see people make good choices. :-)

To those that say T5's do not get as hot as halides...here is a simple experiment. Take 4-25 watt heaters and put them in a tank, take one 100 watt heater and put it in a tank...which tank is being heated by 100 watts of heat? The heat is still there just spread out in 4 heaters instead of one. Both will heat your tank to 80 degrees.

If you switch to T5's make sure it is for the right reasons and don't skimp on a cheap fixture that you will end up putting on e-bay. lol

I agree with the smoking girl above...keep what you have but look at changing the pc's...they are your source of wasted energy. A watt is a watt and we cannot change that. :D

Rachel--Movie: Bladerunner
She is hot in a "replicant" sort of way--Is she not??

I also agree with that phat Pontiac on the pc

yeah i'm gonna stick with current lights just got to get rid of cheap usa current halide bulbs and get some de bulbs with some blue in them like phoenix 14k 150 watt, current bulbs to much of a yellow color.

They don't advertise for killers in the newspaper. That was my profession. Ex-cop. Ex-blade runner. Ex-killer.

awesome movie
