Found this interesting

i wonder if its really that we just discovered this, or that the octopi have been adapting and just started doing this. they are very intellgent

I'm sure you guys already know, but they can also be taught how to open a closed jar if there is a tasty crab inside. First, just lightly put the lid on with a snack inside and he will lift it off. On day 2, barely screw on the lid and he will see that he has to slightly turn and lift. Then each day after that, slightly increase the tightness and soon the octopus will learn to wrap his arm around the lid and unscrew it in order to gain access to the meaty treat inside.

They are very intelligent creatures.

I heard a story one time about an octopus keeper who had a holding tank full of crabs next to his octopus tank (he would feed these crabs to the octopus). When the guy noticed more crabs missing from that tank than what he was feeding to the octopus he finally decided to setup a camera to see what was happening. Apparently, the octopus would sneak out of his tank into the crab holding tank, eat a couple snacks, and then return to his display tank.

I didn't think it was possible either. Then I talked to someone who saw it happen, apparently it is possible. They can "walk" outside of their tank for brief periods, very slowly but still walk none-the-less.

i would love to believe this but cant based on word. i would love to be proven wrong and shown some information on this on the web..

Yeah, those videos are all over the place. They CAN crawl on the ground and climb up stuff. I didn't believe the stories but then I got a first hand account and now I believe it. They're crazy.

I also just got to a computer that can play videos and that one with the coconut was hilarious. Just encourages me even more to try teaching one to shoot a gun (unloaded of course ;) ). Someday....

that video doesnt prove anything to me about them cralwing out of a closed lid, getting food that crawling back. that was an open bucket and it prolly just got caught or something so it was very stressed

Great video, I am currently trying the crab in a bottle. My octopus has shown interest, he dances around the bottle, gives it a touch but didn't go after the crab. I am going to try again with the bottle open, maybe the extra encouragement with make a difference. I just hope I didn't get a stupid one. :spin3:
