HOB Filters

HOB Filters

I kinda like the idea of having a filter, so I can run specific medias when/if I need to. Any recommendations for that? Should I go canister or just get a smaller hob?

I have a 90G mixed reef with all HOB filters and skimmer. I have 2 MarineLand H.O.T Magnums filled with crushed coral BIO filters, 1 MarineLand 350 and a AquaC Remora skimmer no sump need. the HOT Mags are cleaned once every 6 months, 350 monthly with saltwater tooooo easy to maintain. No flooding!! Lol:bounce1:

I had a 150 FOWLR w a nice variety of fish. REALLY liked it. I was plumbed to the basement. Sump w polyester mat filter and bio balls. LONG time ago. :-)

If I was to do that tank again I would do the sump, great skimmer, separate carbon and phosphate reactors, and in those reactors I'd use some poly type particulate filter. No HOB for me.

These tanks are great. A friend has a 220 that must be 25 years old. His fish live longer than many dogs.

How noisy is that skimmer? This tank is going to be in the living area and I would hate to just hear a loud roar all the time lol

I just bought the Aquamaxx ConeS HOB. My water was crystal clear within 24 hrs and has remained that way. I went big as I run this powerful skimmer on my 75G reef. Really nice skimmer from what I can tell so far.

I've heard some really good things about it...However, damn it's expensive!!! It also seems to be massive! However, it may be worth it if that is the only filtration that I have to have. Anyway you could take a pic of it on your tank?

In this hobby, you usually get what you pay for and it pays to only have to buy something once.

Wanted to run something by you for advice, I'm new to saltwater previously but use to breed cichlids my tank has been emptied so I decided I am going to go saltwater FOWLR/LS and once the tank is established for about 5 months add easy to-keep soft corals and then if I see successful progress I will continue to LPS and anemones. I currently have a Juwel vision 450 liter tank (approx. 120 US gallons), penn plax cascade 1500 gph filter, 5 - 800 gph powerheads, (total turn over approx. 45 times at 5500 gph) 3 - AQUATOP 200w heaters, 2 - AQUAMANA LED-60x3W Dimmable 180W Blue/White LED, Lee's Protein Skimmer...custom building a top for the tank that houses the lights...I just wanted to list my equipment because I haven't found many people around in the hobby. After all the research I've decided to go with live sand straight from the ocean here and collect sea water. I've been snorkeling and seen reef and tropical fish 5 feet offshore so I believe the sand and water will do good well in reducing the cycling period. My plan is to collect the sand and water this weekend and cycle for one week before adding two small cheap fish. I plan on DIY dry/live rock because I want to customize the structure caves and spire. I am joining a group that have live rock and corals so I will buy some off of them for starter. How does everything sound so far?

I had a HOB filter that leaked onto an electrical outlet. There is ALWAYS a chance of failure with everything. I run an eshopps overflow on my 75 and it has never leaked or lost syphon. I can get some picture of my plumbing if you would like.

Also, im not sure if someone has mentioned it yet but if you do decide to go with a sump check out the AQUAXX EM series.

One way that you can check if the tank is tempered or not is by taking polarized sunglasses and a laptop. First, put the laptop into or on the other side of the tank and turn it on. Then take the polarized sunglasses, look through them towards the screen and if you see lines/striped going through the screen of the laptop then it IS tempered. If there are no lines then it is not tempered.
