My foxface is hiding a lot of time. he's usually sitting in the back corner flipping his dorsal fins up and down. he will sometimes be dark in color and other times lighter. he doesn't like any other fish around him. When i feed he has great color and is out swimming with the other fish. i've tried upping feedings and even switching different foods. he's just a cranky SOB. is this normal for them?

Tank size? Tank maturity? What other fish?

How long have you had him? It sounds like he's just getting adjusted. Do you have a cave he can hide in? That will ease his transition to yor tank. Its not terribly uncommon for them to stare you down and flex its spines and or display its stress coloration.

i know its a kinda a small tank for him. its a 55 gallon. tank is been up for about 6 months. no signs of cycling anymore. all levels are great. other fish include 2 clowns, flame angel, coral beauty, and a firefish. oh and a yellow headed goby but he's part of my clean up crew.

yes i have plenty of rock and hiding spots for him to hang out in and he does. i've got about 80lbs of LR that is molding into lots of caves and holes.

Yeah it sounds like its stressed from overcrowding. Hate to sound like the "fish police", but 55 is the recommended size for one dwarf angel, and maybe some smaller fish. Having a coral beauty and foxface, sounds like some agression will be occurring.

I agree. Any animal will get cranky when cramped. IMO, that may be the most common reason for aggression in normally passive fish.....and people.
