Foxface

Foxface's are extremely neurotic fish; they have a tendancy to startle easily, and when scared they'll drain nearly all of their coloring from their body and dart around the tank.

They Do posture with their spines, but like others I think its a sign of fear or apprehention. I've never been stung by a foxface, but the guy at my lfs has, he said its sort of like a bee sting on crack, with the same nasty side effects of hospitalization and death if you are allergic to them.

Do they eat bubble algae?

I do not believe so. Everything else they seem to eat with a passion. My guy has really cleaned up my tank.

My Mag Foxface was added first. He is very timid with other fish and backs off when they get in a feeding frenzy. I have a sailfin Tang that is a third his size and five blue gudgeon gobies with him. The Fox swims with the S/F and picks at rock together and I have seen many times when the gobies will actually take flake or a piece of Nori right from his mouth. My Foxface is the largest fish in my tank and seems to be the thinnest. I sometimes worry he doesn't get enough to eat. As far as threatening with his spines, he flexes them once in a while but definitely not in aggression. I do not want to bump him when I have an arm in the tank.

negative on the bubble algea

I'm thinking of getting a Foxface face for my tank.............I have lots of "bad" grass, I guess it is a sort of caulpera. Would the Foxface eat this?
Seems like this fish has good and bad points...........would those that have replied to this thread so far, get one again?
Mine would be the third fish in the tank, along with a Flame Angel and Percula clown(shy too). Would a Foxface be ok with these guys?

I have had "Foxy" for about 6 months, he lives in my 125g FOWLR. He is actually best of friends with my dog-faced puffer, Bandit. I was scared because the puffer would "lay" right on top of the foxface's spines, and he is yet to get poked, so I wonder if they actually have to inject their venom?

I love my foxface, and would definitley get him again....

I just had calurpa in my tank. It was gone in 2 days after I put my Foface in. Does your "grass" look like this:

If it does then yes a Foxface will eat it. As for would I get one again-I can not say yet. I have only had mine for a week. I certainly would not be happy if this guy implaes one of my fish. From what I have seen on this thread , it appears most people are happy with their Foxface. FYI-I have 2 ocellaris clowns and so far thay are fine.

can you post an "after" picture to see what the foxface did? Also, I'm still wandering if these guys are reef safe or not?

My Foxface is very timid. It also sticks up its spines but really not aggressive. Never chases other fish. Will take pieces of Macro from my hand. I always keep Macro in the tank and hang a Sushi (Nori seaweed) sheet from the top.

If this is the before picture then I would say you don't have much of a problem, at least compared to the amount of stuff I have on my rocks...........I think a Foxface is in my future!!

He does impressive work.

Since no one wants to answer my question about them being reef safe, does yours bother your corals???

So far he leaves everything alone. I am concerned since I looked around after you posted your question and I have read they may nip at softies. I hope I can avoid this. I have noticed some of the other people on this thread that have them also have reef tanks. I would certainly like to hear from some of the others on this.

Same here, I would really like one but I'm pretty determined to try and stay with the safest reef fish I can. This is my first foray into saltwater and there are a lot of fish I can't have with the corals I want.

I had my foxface for about a month. He was more than well fed.

He ate an $80 brain, and 2 $65 fungias. This was a $20 fish...not worth it.

foxface

foxface

Mine eats right out of my hand. But he is a Virgate Rabbitfish and im trying to get his blue lines to come out more any help that would be great.

I have a onespot.. hes timid in the sense that people scare him but he eats like a pig- doesnt really touch the nori though i think it sort of scares him.. even when i soak it in garlic

I put formula 2 in there and he goes nuts and even pushes everyone out of the way for mysis so he has a very varied diet.

He deosn't go after my corals or clam with his nice set of teeth, but he does great work on algae- the only thing is he can be forceful when he swims with any intention like to get food and as such is kind of a klutz knocking things over every now and then but I have him in a 55g. He's still on the small side and will probably migrate to my 125g when i get it up and running..

My 55g is turning into more of a peaceful docile tank with a midas blenny, scooter dragonet, pair of clownfish and recently a pipefish that is actually doing pretty well so far... and dont worry i have a fuge and cultivate pods :)
