Frag Labels

I have seen frags with labels/tags attached to the plugs before and was wondering if anyone knew how to print those. I searched around and can find plenty of "waterproof" printing options, but nothing I could see standing up to constant submersion in saltwater. - Thanks

Do you have an example of where you saw these?

We use car key tags for some of ours and sharpie or pencil depending on the situation. Problem is you have to buy 1000 at a time.

The other option is the Thrive frag plugs include a jewelry style tag

That actually just looks like a label printer label. Like the ptouch things.

I see amazon sells those key tags also, so that seems like a good option. I was just reading about the ptouch labels. They say they're good for outdoor use, so they might hold up underwater. Has anyone used them for frags. Reef safe?

Go to your local nursery hardware store they should have tags made from PVC that you would put around the stem of a plant for labeling they come in packs of several hundred for like 10- 20$

I use an embossing label maker, then super glue them to the plug

Have it laminated. I am not sure but a vaccum seal food saver might work. I like the idea.

I use the TZe type label tape at work and it is pretty much water proof the the strips are laminated.

Did you ever try the TZe tape underwater? I am looking for a way to label my stuff as well and would prefer something that could be printed as opposed to using a sharpie.

Printing a label then putting it under saltwater doesn't seem like a good plan to me. I haven't looked into that much but I can see a frag sitting, hidden, lurking for the day then BAM! the saltwater finally breaks down the label and you got problems....

Perhaps I'm looking to much into it....

I print them out on regular paper, then put transparent packing tape on each side to laminate and waterproof. Works great, dirt cheap

Some of my marine cultured chalice colonies have labels sticking from their base. I have been looking for the labels too. It sounds like, embossed labels glues to frags, regular paper with clear packaging tape on both sides and perhaps the p touch labels work.

Which is the "best" method and what is the best method to attach them to the plug?

That's where my test seems to fail. I have better success with setting the frag rack up like a battleship board and keeping track out of the water. Ie, a1 is a purple pe, b7 is a rasta, etc..

Oh yeah, I often stick a p touch label on the outside of the glass to help me learn the scientific name of a new to me coral, or if I am being lazy I just write on the glass with a dry erase marker, or a permeant marker if I want it to last and it can easily be wiped off with xylene.

Sounds like a possible application for 3D-printed numbers in ABS plastic, red on black, with a little loop for threading a string through.

Is it okay to use a sharpie on the bottoms of tiles or would the ink be bad?

I too am looking for a solution for this. I called a few of the label maker companies but they are not sure about the tape being underwater and/or the chemicals leaching.

I also looked into the embossed labels but unless I am mistaken they have adhesive on the backs. I know the A1,A2....B1,B2 method but I tend to move stuff around depending on how it is doing.

I would really like to find some sort of solution like they use with those maricultured colonies I see.
