frag swap?

It seems like the hobby is kind of dead here in pitt. many people got/ are in the process of getting out now. The local economy overall is kind of a bust so alot of us can't really afford to be in anymore.

Brett Robinson (Indiana, PA) and I (Kittanning, PA) have flats that are full. I'd be be glad to set a tour up. If there is interest, I could setup some tables in my garage (48' x 40') for those looking to do some swapping.

After seeing fish stores in other areas, I think our local stores are partially to blame for reef popularity. They seem to get the same items in, many times specimens are small/poor quality, and they are still asking a premium price. I haven't seen Big Dog's setup; however, Brett Robinson and Dave's Aquastock put most of the local pet shops to shame. I have relatives in Rochester, NY and there are 2 stores there that are awesome. Their display tanks really illustrate how beautiful this hobby can be. You cannot blame the local economy, because Kodak is Rochester's largest employer and they are not doing well; yet, the 2 stores are moving reasonable and high end corals.

And the local economy here is actually better than in most of the country.

Not sure wy we couldn't get a good swap going here, maybe it is because we have such good swaps just 2 hours away (Cleveland/Columbus)?

Mostly it's because like ray said, we have numerous swaps within a decent distance that it's not worth the time and effort to set one up. The pmasi just had a sponsored trip to the LEAR fragswap a few weeks ago and it's almost like we have to pull teeth to get ppl to come on a free road trip. So that being said, who's to say that a swap in Pittsburgh would be any different?

That may be because you blow a whole day. The majority of the people that go to those swaps has a couple hours invested, not 12! I mean most people have families, chores, work, and can't kill a whole day especially on a weekend. It's about folks getting together, BS'ing, and trading a couple corals all in a reasonable amount of time........ not about making a buck. I'm sorry but I don't think you have to have a good turnout for it to be successful. Sundays have been good and most people that come up to my place spend a couple hours, have a beverage or 2, talk about our tanks, trade a couple corals, and they can still get things done at home.

I'd be in for some of what Big Dog is talkin' bout. We would have to plan a few weeks ahead so everyone with wives/kids can make arrangements to get away for a few hours. I have some frags I've been working on.

We love to go to swaps this is why I posed the question, we just went LEAR swap in OH and got curious why I never seen a Pitt swap advertised!!!

imo it boils down to the local clubs having the will to put in the work it takes to do a swap, getting in touch with sponsors, vendors, manufactures to donate goods for raffles is key, if there is a good core group who is willing to the work it can be done successfully.

I recommend bringing it up at the next meeting, which is tonight, to see if the board is willing to host a sponsored event.

My offer still stands, for those willing to assist in setting up a frag "get together" throw a PM my way.

No offense to the local reef club but I think it's best to do something not involving them. If they wanted to do a frag swap or thought it would be suscessfull they would have done it them selfs. There's obviously not much interist on their behalf. If there is its not evident. Again no offence reef club.

This has been brought up every year. The club is not opposed to listening to a plan and assisting in putting one on. However in all years past every attempt has been a flop, either people don't step up and participate and it all ends up falling on one person or no one shows up.

Several years ago PMAS put on a swap in the Radisson Monroeville in June. They advertised it everywhere possible and then it turned out to be a 80degree day and about 30 people showed up. A lot of work and money went into this and it ended up being a loss and a lot of people and some stores got turned off by it and do not want to participate in another one.

I work with a lot of vendors and most really hate to do anything in the summer time. You have too much to contend with and it's traditionally a slow time in the hobby. In the winter you have a lot of great swaps in the area already C-Sea/ CORA/ Lear / NCPARS to name a few. In order to get something not competing we would be pushing close to january, late december and again you are dealing with weather that can greatly detour people from participating.

With that said as I mentioned we have not ruled it out, but there are a lot of negatives against it already.

The first steps would be forming a committee, deciding a time frame, finding a location central to surrounding areas and clubs and going from there. I don't see this happening fast but its not impossible.
