I know I joined because of the swap, I mean the meetings are cool and all, but the swap...now thats the icing on the cake.

I guess I should have been a bit more clear than that. I didn't join MARS just because of the swaps. I had already been thinking about joining for a few months when I heard about the "Frag Swaps"; I was finally sold. But I joined MARS for all the reasons that people have mentioned. When someone mentioned how many people get drawn to MARS because of the swaps, I agreed and offered myself as an example.
"I mean the meetings are cool and all..", that deffinetely didn't come out the way I meant it either.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

At least you go to the meetings, Eric. In the short period I've been a part of the club, I've seen people post and offer all kinds of contributions to the club. Than, they ask for freebies, win something in the raffle, and you never see them again:rolleye1:

The MARS swap will be in October, as it has been for the past 3 years. If someone wants to make one happen sooner, then by all means please do so. I see a lot of threads started by people with great ideas, but not enough motivation to make them a reality. That's too bad.

Well I got a spot if you guys are serious, I've never done a frag swap b4, if someone (rich-MinH) wanna let me know what it consists of, I can hold it at my clubhouse.

Has about 4 round tables, kitchen, pool table, big screen tv, 2 couches....

The "UNOFFICIAL MARS" Frag Swap.... How does that sound? :-)

Oh and yes we do have 2 BBQ's next to the pool, hot tub and ping pong table.....

OH so much fun....

Lets dump a bunch of salt in the pool and swim with our fishies... :-) OK done being silly.

I agree that you don't have to be in an officer position to take action. Like Rich said so very well, "Cool, make it so."

Minh, I was a strong student member of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) where one thing we focused on was membership. Clearly there is a general shift in our societal paradigm where people only see the 'what's in it for me factor' and rarely wish any form of membership in an all too independent society. With the comments on this thread it is clear this paradigm even hits home at a local reef club.

I'm pretty slammed for time but I would gladly frag some coral and provide it if others wished a more immediate frag swap instead of patiently waiting for the October event. Further I know it isn't a 'SWAP' but there is the upcomming Bay Area Coral Farmer's Market.

After the WMC committees and the MARS Officers did so much with that event, please someone else take the torch on this one if so interested. Good luck with this.

Chris

The club's purpose is to promote, create, and enlarge the hobby of reefkeeping in the greater Sacramento area and beyond.

let's keep this in mind at all times, no politics or cheap shots!~)

A clubhouse will be much easier to work with than a public park. At a previous swap, we had a lot of corals die because they got stuck sitting in the sun/heat for too long.
Some things that helped make the last one go faster and limit the stress on animals and other suggestions:
1- All frags are put into those disposable storage containers, not zip-lock bags (they leak).

2 - All containers are labeled with the type of coral, the name or RC handle of the farmer and the type of lighting it needs. If you are clever you could print a little picture of it. They tend to shrivel up in the containers and it's hard to tell what you have, especially with zoas (zoos).

3 - At the swap, sort the frags into categories. This saved us a lot of time. SPS that require MH lights or are otherwise not for beginners go in one area. Put all the mushrooms and xenia together with other beginner stuff. It also helps new reefers get frags they are more likely to be successful with and the more experienced don't have to sort through a bunch of pesky xenia to find acans and blastos.

4 - It will help if you have some books on hand from the library to help new reefers find out about the corals and their requirements before they take them home.

5 - Everyone will be putting their new frags into QT for 4 weeks before they are put into display tanks, right? This is an important part of our hobby that needs to be encouraged to ensure our collective success.

I got to agree with #5 on your list...I spent two months after the BAR swap dealing with problems from not QTing the new stuff.

LOL #5.... you should change your name to "QTQUEEN" :-D

Thats was one thing I was concerned about was the heat. AC is much nicer....

WEll IM open for my club house if you guys throw some dates, I can call and see if it is open to reserve

Where did that come from? I have not seen any politics or cheap shots from anyone. If it is in response to this comment by Rich

I agree with him. A lot of threads get started by someone with a great idea, but rarely is there any follow through. I'm guilty of doing the same thing, probably on several occasions.

I think that's all Rich was pointing out.

Is this our club's mission statement, or the Bay Area club you are a member of?

My recommendation - at this time keep it to MARS member only, otherwise the thing can grow pretty big. No new membership at the frag swap (actually since this isn't an official club frag swap, you can't take membership). And charge participants who don't bring something some $$$. Last - commit on the date ASAP so people can plan on atttending and start fragging.

Talk about coming from left field. How's it look out there Shawn  :D

Back on track now.....OK so like since not many people have offered anything, I guess I will try and organize this. yay or nai...

Some things...

Is there a way I can get a list of members to know who is a memeber and who isnt...I like the idea of keeping it to current mars members.

Books from the club Library, who has them and how can we get them.

Date June 24th or 25th??? I will check those dates to see if the clubhouse is availble.

ALso, anyone like a potluck type frag swap...

I'll help look for a place to hold the swap, I just need to know about how many people attend these swaps?

I have a Place that it can be held at.....Thats not a problem....Its free, Its big and we can have it untill 11pm....

No worries on how many people attend, Its gonna be for club members only.....

ok sounds good. Thanks for organizing this. Now are we going to have some rules/guidelines/fees ect.? For example are we going to charge a small admission to help raise money for MARS? Are we going to have a minimum amount of frags that everyone has to bring in order to participate? Are we going to have everyone bring a potluck dish? Are we going to organize the swap a certain way? ect. Just lets us know what you thoughts are on things like this.
