frag swap

I have enough room in my back yard to hold the event and have 3 BBQ's, (this was discussed with the BOD) that was not the issue. Trying to get everything together and work with the other clubs was the problem. Even though some members could help out, at this point I don't think that we will be able to rely on enough people within a short time.

Sounds like a great option, Rich. Thanks!

Is there an area where all the frag tables can be kept in the shade for the entire period? This is the only reason why an indoor venue would be ideal.

MARS BOD Announcement

4. The October frag swap has been cancelled; however, the frag swap cycle will resume in 2007. Before the end of 2006, an alternate event for paid MARS members will take place at one of the regularly scheduled meetings. The details will be announced at a later time.
Didn't anyone read the MARS BOD Announcement thread? The frag swap was cancelled. Personally, I'd rather wait and see what the alternate event is. It would be highly unlikely that the MARS club would be willing to pay for the frag swap AND the alternate event in addition to the expensive October/November speakers Marc Daniels booked.

I'm pretty sure everyone read the post and knows it was cancled. People are trying to bring it back to life. IMO for me when I was a rook. the swaps were the best part of the club so to just yank that out from under people a month before it was going to happen is not too cool. I commend Karl, Mihn and others for still trying to put this thing on!

If there is a certain Few who would be willing to take on the tasks we could get this done.

one person for the BBQ, One person to speak with the other clubs, and one person to set up the swap and obtain tables and chairs.

I do have family that have TONS of foldable tables and chairs, We hold very large parties when it comes to birthdays and holidays at there house's. I "Might" be able to borrow them. I also have a small charcol BBQ and I have a Gas BBQ. I mean between members I am sure we can get the BBQ and tables.

For shade. Wal-mart( yes minh I know cheap :-D ) has those canopy shades for like 20-30 dollars. Especialy since summer is ending in a few weeks, I am sure BIG 5 will be having sales on summer items. I think my mother in law might have one I could get.

And yes we know it was cancelled, we are very aware of what is going on in our club. But a month away and only to be cancelled, Not cool.

So we take it upon ourselves to try and help out the club.

I have an EZ-up that I could bring.

OK so I am a total newbie here I just joined the club at the last meeting. One of the main reasons for me joining was the frag swap. Every club, group, or organization will have political issues (trust me I know). However in light of the recent political mix up I still want to see the frag swap as do others. From where I am sitting all I can see is a bunch of folks that are willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen. In contrast I also see some folks that are saying skip it. I can only assume from my past experiences the those that are saying skip it are tired and burned out.

What I would like to know is there a way to meet in the middle?

I don't even have any frags to swap, so I was going to cough up some cash.

First off, no one's yanking anything.

Please excuse my frustration.....with everything, but if you aren't up to speed on club matters as of late, the BOD is running a bit shorthanded. I agreed to stay on for the next 3 months simply to ease the transition into the next election cycle and wrap up some hanging club business. Currently there is a lot of unresolved matters, and frankly we've got our hands full at the moment.

The old VP has booked some very expensive speakers for the last part of the year (Dr. Ron - $1000, Eric B. - close to a grand, Sanjay - also close to a grand), all for the education and entertainment of the general membership (kind of like the WMC that only a handful of members bothered to show up for).

And to top it off, some kid shows up on R.C. asking for some spare freebie corals (no offense sinaloa213, you're not the first one to do it ;) ).

If everyone wants to have a swap so badly then by all means, have at it (thanks BTW Karl for stepping up and making the effort. Props.). I think that there are only a few people that realize just how involved setting up one of these really is.

Unbeknown to many of the members, the BOD has, and continues to work incredibly hard to provide an educational and informative meeting every month, and the occasional swap and "free pizza" end of the year party at the December meeting.

Far too often I see so many people gripping their raffle tickets, getting uptight if the guest speaker runs more than about an hour. "Hurry up and spin the drum." is what I see written on everyone's faces, not "Wow, I actually learned something tonight!"

Since everyone's so interested in why the BOD is what it is, re-read this post.

"Ask not what your club can do for you, as what you can do for your club."

It sounds like the BOD is unlikely to fund the frag swap. I fully respect the decision of the BOD. However, I don't think this should stop the members on trying to put together a frag swap.

As I mentioned earlier, I'd be happy to help in whatever way possible. Let's pick one person to be the lead person who will assign responsibilities. I nominate Karl. :D

In my opinion - October is too short of a period of time to try to put one together. Maybe November or December would be better. If Karl wants to set a date, that would be great. If you are committed to helping put together the frag swap - please post your name here.

Hey Jordan -

I am not trying to shot down your idea. While I think it's a novel idea, I don't think it would work for MARS. We have approximately three hours at our meeting. For a 100+ members, it would be difficult to combine a frag swap and eating at the same time. NVR is able to do a coral exchange at a meeting because they are much smaller group.

Oh ok. Just throwing ideas out there to try and be helpful. I was looking at some of the pictures from past swaps and they didn't look very large. Since I just joined early this year this will actually be my first swap and december holiday party. Is there a local park that already has picnic tables that we could do the swap at that would be free? The only hard thing with that is we would have to plan a date sooner so we don't get rained out.

The Sylvan Library has a community room that it donates to non profit organizations. Mickaboo the Parrot rescue uses it about three time a year. I'm not sure about capacity, but it could be an option. Also I have no idea what their calendar looks like either.

I cant remember who, think it was Doug or Edwin not sure, sorry guys, its friday night ;), but a handfull of us had the thing nearly ready to go a couple months ago. But the drive was kinda snuffed out due to anticipation and willingness to wait for the officiall club sponsored swap. Seems like the momentum could easily be picked up again if we are able to pick up the pieces and give it another try since it was half way in the works. Bottom line though Minh had a good point in appointing a leader, the opposite to the 'ol saying would hold true I think in this case of, "two many indians and not enough chiefs" without a majority consensus of someone to play lead delegator, this will be hard pressed to get off the ground. The potential to keep shifting to greener pastures without following through basically. Otherwords it's going to take some willing to find out the specifics/availability,etc. and be able to book, reserve, etc. upon the greenlight given by those that wish to participate. Some of the difficulties faced I see is those sitting on the fence, waiting to see if it's gonna be "worth" going to. A good game plan could fix that.

So, who's got the plan and can run with it? My vote is to make it as free as can be. That way no approval for funding is needed, to avoid more lag time. If there's a community center that would let non-profit organizations in for free or major discount let's hear more about it! Shoot, we are just swapping corals, a park would work just fine for that IMO. Also, being a non official event, the swap will be much smaller. My guess no more than 50 people, opposed to the 100+ the official and more promoted ones can draw. Just my 2 cents.Good luck, and believe it or not, I still got a few frags to swap!

It was me that tried the last one, and the issue with me not doing it was that noone but only 3 people said they would come. Not worth the work for only 3 people. No one was emailing or messaging me about it, so turn look none to slim.

A park might be alright in november, only thing is the weather might be too cold if we wait too long.

The community center Idea is good.

I think Karl would make a great chieftain :-)

Since this "would" of been my first frag swap I have a question about how the club does the date.

When does the BOD generally pick a date for the frag swap, is it a month before, 2-3 months before or at the start of the year?

I mentioned before that we an use my place which I have room to set up all the table in side to hold your frags and keep them at minimal stress, although, I don't have all the room for everyone to be in at the same time, you all can hang out in the back yard or front with the BBQ. Only need members to bring tables, chairs and tent for those hanging out waiting for their turn to pick.

I can only do this within the next 2 months. Our new venture will pick up steam afterward :bounce1: :bounce3: :bounce2:

Karl, you can be the lead, hopefully we can put it together for everybody.

Anthony

Everyone,

Thank you so much for your kind words and recommendation. Like the BAR Swap's Rare Arbiter duty, I'm the only one dumb enough to do it:lol:

I will first try and generate interest, not only within out club, but our surrounding clubs as well. It was suggested to me privately, that some may already be burnt out with frag swaps to begin with. Still, I'd like for all of us to get together, just to celebrate the hobby and eachother. It has been a rough year (and a rough summer) for all the clubs and its members.

Whether or not we're there to share frags or to find that missing piece to your collection, it's always nice to see so many friendly faces all at once.

Kindest regards,

Karl
