Frag Tank lighting

It makes no difference whether this is a frag tank or a display tank. Use the same lighting either way. Lighting choices need to be made based on what will be in the tank, the depth of the tank, height of the fixture and size of the tank to be covered. MH or T5's are both good choices, but the real choice depends on the rest of the information and environment.

Well it kinda does matter because if i am not keeping it for viewing pleasure I will not put lighting that is appealing to the human eye. IMO

If your frag tank is going to be used for SPS frags, you are best to go with a 20K MH. Depending on the size of your frag tank, you can probably get away with a 150W.

20K will really bring out the color in frags...........

can't help you until we know how deep the frag tank is and what kind of frags you want to keep....also will need to know other dimensions.

ok well I dont care what they look like in the frag tank i am trying to acheive maximum growth. Which light gets max growth?

I'm a huge fan of T5's for frag tanks. Since most frag tanks tend to be short and wide, T5's provide great coverage and penetration over the entire surface area. I love MH's for a large and deep display. However, in a frag tank, I think they can be a bit limiting as far as coverage is concerned.

I disagree with this. I have a 24x24x12 frag tank with a Phoenix DE bulb on a lumenmax reflector. I have my frag rack about 6" from the bottom. I recently got a PAR meter and I only got PAR readings in the low 100s (120 - 140).

I do have a PAR meter but have never used it in my frag tank.............I am just going off of the growth and amazing colors I get from a 150W 20K DE XM bulb (8 hours per day)

I have a lot more light in my display (3 x 250W 14K, 2 x 150W 20K, 2 X 55W Actinic T5), but the colors in my frag tank are noticeably different (same water column)
