frag tank lightning

hi everyone!

wondering what are your suggestion of bulbs for a frag tank and the realition between bulbs and growth. more white more growth?

MY frag tank will be 20g high (1yr since stablish). I was thinking of using it to put frag for quarentine and growth befor moving to a new 40breeder I builded. I like softies and lps. I also thougth it will be good to have a running spare tank in case of emergency. what do you think?

I'm not sure if I would use lightning on a frag tank! :P

What fixture or bulb type are you planning to use? VHO, T5's, PC, MH, or LED? Lots of different types.

I don't like the 20H for a frag tank, I don't like them for a QT tank either. I don't like running a frag tank as a QT tank (they should be seperate). I would rather go with a 30L for the frag. As far as the QT tank, it depends on what you are QTing as to the size, for "normal" QT stuff a 20L or another 30L would be good. Again for a spare tank, it depends on what you plan on putting in there for the emergency and for how long.

For my custom tank (48"L x 24"W x 15"H) I am going all T5HO lights. For the shallow depth (about 12" water to frags) it's the better choice. I will be going with a total of 8 48" bulbs over mine.

I'm not a big fan of the 20 high either. 20 long or 30 breeder would be a good bet. In which case I'd use t5's or VHO's to keep heat generation to a minimum.

There's nothing wrong with using a 20 high for a frag tank. Yes, there are better choices but if you have it on hand there is no reason not to use it.

What is your budget? Having $20,000 vs. $20.00 to spend will have an impact on appropriate answers. Knowing that custom LEDs or top of the line MH will give you good growth doesn't help much if you have a shop light and curly bulb budget.

If the tank is in use now, what lights are you already using?

Ok... So I already have a t5ho 4 bulb fixture. I'll be moving the content of the 20 h tank to the new tank 40 breeder. My 20 tanks has already 1 yr establish so is time to replace bulb, as now it has 2 white and 2 actinic. So the q is the best spectrum of bulb for best look and growth. My idea ( not sure if is a good one) is to get small frag let it acclimate and grow then move it to the 40 b. What do you think?

Frag tank lighting is no different than reef lighting, so work with the bulb combination you would use for reefs. Two 10K and two actinic work fine, or look at the ATI blues and purples. The T5 thread in the lighting forum has a ton of information.
