frag tank setup.

First off I just want to say, it was great finally getting to meet you Roger, you have an amazing setup over there. Secondly, thanks for the deal on the frag tank setup. Alright so, I picked up a 20L frag tank, drilled with bulkheads, stand plumbing etc. This is the 20L that Bobby sold to Roger. I have a couple ideas on how I want to tie it into my main tank.



Option 1 - Buy a bigger return pump and just feed the frag tank off my main manifold.

Option 2 - Run the full siphon from my main tank into the frag then just have the frag tank drain into the sump as it would in option 1.

Option 3 - T off my full siphon and add a siphon to the frag tank but still have the full siphon coming from my main tank to the sump, with a T also going into the frag tank, again, it will then drain into the sump from the frag tank.

I see he took everything out of the tank, dam Roger. Glad you picked this up, I would have bought it for sure later in the week.

I'm a fan of option 1.

Don't have a reason why.. Maybe I don't want you to buy a bigger pump.
And I want you to keep it simple. Just sounds easier as well. :spin1:

Yeah man, not many people would pick up on the SWC logo. Cool gear local folks, and something different than the 300 "saltlife" stickers I see everyday.

The more I think of it option 2 is nice as well. Nice set up and no extra money needed on the return pump.

I was going to make a comment about the skinny water shirt today but there was like 3 or 4 different conversations already taking place.

And now that I look at it again, I don't think Id be able to run this as a full siphon. Drain is on the top and return is on the bottom. And there is no way I am running the return under water because of back siphon. I could always use the top (1") as the return and the bottom (3/4") as the drain back into the sump. I might just T off my main tank full siphon and do it that way. I also have a spare pump that I could stick in my sump so run this tank. With this tank itself being so small I wouldn't need a ton of turnover, but then Id have another pump in the sump.

Maybe trying option 2 and not spending the money on the pump and if it doesn't work out the way you want it then option 1.

Plumbed to a larger tank usually yields really stable little tanks.

Definitely started getting into SWC gear once a friend introduced me to fly fishing.

Who knows. Maybe I'll just close the bulkheads up and use it as a QT/hospital tank. Actually, the more I think about it, that might be a better option.

I like option 2 but for that to work I would want to know the size of the display and pump running from sump to display.

Option 4 buy a second small pump and have 2 pumps in the sump. The small one feeds the frag tank. That's the simplest way. You wouldn't have to buy a bigger pump just a small new pump cheeper then larger pump and not much ultra plumbing cost of the manafold.

I don't really have a vote just adding another option in the mix

Main tank is a 75g w/ DC6000 (1585ish gph pre head loss). I do have an Aqueon quietflow 1700 (264-449gph before headloss) that I thought about actually just adding to the main sump and running the frag tank with. That is probably the way I am going to set it up if I decide to turn it into a frag tank.

I do like the way it looks next to my main display. I might make the frag tank stand a bit taller though.

just paint the stand black and make a light hanging kit and a custom diy led panel like the main tank that would be sweet

The other half came home today and said "that seems like a bit much" not sure she is going to sign off on it but, I think I'm just going to do it anyways. And I really don't like the stand that short, there is not a lot I hate more than having to bend over to look at a tank. It would cost me $30ish to fix the stand how I want it. And I probably won't build a light for this tank, might just pick up a premade fixture for this one.

Yeah a d120 would be plenty for this tank, especially for zoas. Who knows, might pick up some nano box pucks and build something around those. Not sure about lights just yet, it's really hard to beat the price of a d120 though.

Yeah I picked up a full spectrum d120 for about 80.00 its on a 30 gallon and its almost to much light ....its good its dimmable

what are you thinking on height... bottom of tank at the same height ? the flow of the two tanks at the same height could be cool looking

I was thinking maybe both the stands the same height, the stand for 75g is 39" so I'll probably make the stand for 20L the same height, then the 75g will only be 9" taller instead of 22'' taller.

Well, my g/f really enjoys the hobby. She likes zoas and LPS and while I plan on putting some in my tank I don't want that many in the 75. And at the same time I don't feel like maintaining two separate tanks so I think by plumbing this into mine it would be super stable.
