Frag tank with or without skimmer

I want to have a coral frag tank with just coral and no fish. The tank is 36 inches long 24 inches wide and 12 inches tall; 45 gallons. I also a a 250w metal halide and a powerhead.

Would I need a protein skimmer. I also have a hang on filter rated for 70 gallons, would this work instead.

You wont need a skimmer if there is no fish just keep up on your weekly water changes.

Thanks for the help Mike. Now I wont have to spend $150 on a skimmer but on rare corals
