Frag Tank

Could a frag tank be set up with no sand or rock? Just a tank, sump, skimmer, lights etc. Would it need to cycle?

Thanks

Yes, You can use water from your reef so it will not need to cycle. However, rock can be good for filtration but you can put that in the sump. People also like to add wrasse in the frag tank to help with coral pests. They need some sort of sand bed to bury in which could be a small tub full of sand at the back of the tank somwhere.

If you keep fish in there, and have it separate from your main system, you will need rock in there for biological filtration.

Most frag tanks are plumbed into the main system though, so in that case no you wouldn't want anything in there.

It's much easier to keep clean w/ no substrate in there and just a frag rack.

IMO a frag tank should be run seperate from the system. That way if you run into any problems in the main display you still have the frags left. It can also be used for coral QT.

Thanks for the input. I don't want any fish in the frag tank. Just a rack. I did this with QT tank and it did really well with regular water changes. I could pull some rock from my main tank and add it to the sump.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!!

I would put some fully cured and preferably cooked (not litterly but a method) rock in it and let it get through its algae bloom before stocking it with much.

My frag tank is plumbed into my display so I dont have to worry about it. I suggest doing it plumbed into the main system as long as it is disease free.

But then if you do get a disease, it affects the frag and display tank. If you listen to the unmentionable podcast then they discuss it in one of the episodes.
