Fraging dying corals to save them..

Anyone been successful in doing this ? What coral was it and how severe was the damage before attempting to frag it?

I bought a toadstool leather that the LFS said was in good condition and when I got it home after a couple days still hadn't open all the way up so I took him out to try and open him and found his center to be rotten realy bad. I just cut him into 7 pieces cutting the rotting material away as I went. One still died but at least I now have 6 frags. It's better than loseing the whole coral. They always grow back to original size.

I had a big sps crash last spring, never sorted out the exact cause. Within 3 days, I lost almost every single sps I had. I fragged and saved a few (montipora, birds nest, and one of the acros). I fragged many more that were already too far gone. It's worth trying. FWIW, I also moved every sps into another system so the water change probably have played a big a role as the fragging.

I actually fragged a dying Lobo brain and managed to keep the fraged portion alive going on over a week now. I had an acro secale with what I was told was STN but ffragging it did;t work well. I do have a half inch peice still with partial color and partial bleach. Time will tell. I think anyone who has corals apperaing to be dying should give this a shot. Just dont wait till the disease is too far gone. I would also be weary of spreading the disease into the water as well . I would like to say frag underwater in main system water if possible but it seems like it may have some risk involved due to the productioon of particles. I would use a small bucket with tank water and make sure to shake off all the frags in that water. Last thing a dying coral needs is for you to over handfle it or for it to remain out of water for too long IMO. ITs extra stress.

I had a acro secale stn on me too. The frags have been doing well for months now. I put 3 frags of it close together and they have all encrusted into eachother. Thats the only one I've done that with though. I had 2 others that went south before I could get to it and I couldn't find any healthy tips to frag.
