Free 230 gallon tank!

A foreclosed home down the river from me has been totally wiped clean and winterized except for one thing - a 6' long by 2' wide by 3' tall in wall aquarium! Is this too big to be practical for a reef tank? I'd love to have a reef but I'm afraid the lighting, reactors, everything would be bigger and have a way bigger price tag than my 20L reef! Anyway, I was just excited and wanted to get some good ideas for what to do with it - or if it'd be too big to reef it.

Well my roomate has a 6' long x 3' wide x 30" tall reef. It's awesome!!!! That will be the size of my next reef tank. I have a 6' long x 18" wide x 30" tall, and it's just not big enough. It is much more expensive than a 20L but take your time, and get the equipment over time. You don't have to do it all at once. Start with the tank, stand and conopy. Then get lights, and pumps. Put in the some sand and get it running. Don't put anything in it other than some damsels. Then get an adequate skimmer like a ASM G6, way good skimmer for the price. That's what my roommate has. Then start adding live rock. Just take time to do it right.

Its definitely not to big to reef it. Thats an awesome size tank. I would jump all over it.

The fact is the stuff will be more expensive than your 20l but It would be worth it in the long run.

Keep your 20 running so you have something to keep you occupied and set the 230 back and by the equipment piece by piece before you set it up.

You can make a monster beauty there.

Dont add damsels untill the cycle is complete and only then if you really want a PITA in the tank. Its harder than hell to get a damsel out of a large tank.

Why torture a damsel when all you need is liverock? Or even a piece of shrimp.

Thats animal cruelty just like going outside and kicking your dog in the face repeatedly.

Okay, I'm just glad nobody is calling me a thief! It's in wall, so I'll be building a stand first...maybe start cycling the rock in trashcans at the same time. It's got a wet/dry beneath it, should I run that AND a refuge? Reactors? Slow is right, I'm getting lightheaded just thinking about all of it! HA!

shark tank?
lookdown tank?
giant angelfish tank?
big ole moray eel?

shoot me some ideas!

Did you talk to someone and get permission to take it or are you stealing it?

Yeah, don't just STEAL it...talk to someone. lol

And don't go with an ASM. They are garbage. Get a nice MSX, EuroReef, ETSS, etc. Besides lighting, there's no worse place to 'skim' on equipment.
