Free Live Blue/Green Sponge.

I was taking my golden retriver for a swim yesterday. I noticed many large colorful sponges (blue, gray, yellow) washed a shore and what looks like a hundred others of various sizes, shapes and colors still off shore in the grass bed (unattached.) I picked up a few still live ones being careful to put them in the buckett underwater. I've raised some smaller blue/green sponges before and they seem to stay alive, look great and do well in the reef tank. See pic. --anyone who has room for one of them may want to consider getting one while they are coming in. They are FREE if you live in the Tampabay area (By the Skyway.) Keep in mind there are some concerns with bringing in "wild" things to a closed reef. I have not had any problems with parasites or fish disease from the fresh gulf and watch for small green emerald crabs that like to hide in the sponges.

Heading South toward the Skyway from St. Pete, take the scenic overlook just after the toll (rest stop) loop back to the EAST SIDE and the first wide sand point goto just north of the tip. I was there again late this afternoon getting a few for a friend in Palm Harbor.. Their are still some there but only found the Dk blue and Blue/gray today. The water is clear & clean but I still put them in a plastic zip bag and poured fresh r/o salt into the bag overflowing/flushing the sea water. You may also want to search them for little green crabs.
Watch for sting rays in the soft sand --shuffle your feet!!!!
Good luck!!! P.S. Saw a large orange seahorse too!

Someone collecting for us or do we need to go do it ourselves :) i am in St. Pete but it will be next week before I can get across the Skyway to the south side. I am off on Sunday but heading to the Fragswap. Those are some nice colors. I need to get some in my tank. My wife is tired of green... she wants red/blue/orange/etc
