I was taking my golden retriver for a swim yesterday. I noticed many large colorful sponges (blue, gray, yellow) washed a shore and what looks like a hundred others of various sizes, shapes and colors still off shore in the grass bed (unattached.) I picked up a few still live ones being careful to put them in the buckett underwater. I've raised some smaller blue/green sponges before and they seem to stay alive, look great and do well in the reef tank. See pic. --anyone who has room for one of them may want to consider getting one while they are coming in. They are FREE if you live in the Tampabay area (By the Skyway.) Keep in mind there are some concerns with bringing in "wild" things to a closed reef. I have not had any problems with parasites or fish disease from the fresh gulf and watch for small green emerald crabs that like to hide in the sponges.
