Free live rock...or a trip to jail?

So, tonight I was at a party, and my buddy was asking me about my reeftanks. I told him I was setting up a new one and he was like "no way, man I wish I would have known, I would have given you all my TBS live rock."

At this point I was like...what did you do with it? He said, "well I kinda threw it away in the woods behind my apartment complex."

Needless to say I was stunned that somewhere out there in the woods was TBS live rock for the taking....so naturally I asked for directions!

He gave them to me and I proceeded to away from the party immediatly and headed to my place to pick up a flashlight, a sheet to carry all the rock in (plastic bag would have just broke) and went over to his old place.

I spent a good amount of time looking around and finally there it was a nice heap of dead live rock! So I piled it into the sheet and made my way to my car...mind you this all took about 15 min to find and load up.

Well I opened the trunk of my car and all I hear is..."son, you mind telling me what is in that sack!" I turned around to see a cop getting out of his car, and asking me to put my hands on the hood. So I did and it turned out that some girl was watching me out her window and thought I was trying to break in there place cause it looked like I was hiding in the woods, well after they saw I was picking up rocks they pretty much though I was retarded, and let me go haha...God I love being a reefer! They will never know how happy I was =)

Anyways there is alot more out there so i am going back tomorrow in the daylight to get some more!

Here are some pics of what I picked up, I think its about 45 - 50lbs, and the biggest piece is about 12" x 7"

I pressure washed them and have them soaking in a bucket now, how should I go about boiling these? Do I use vinager, or anything to dilute in the water? I have never cleaned dirty rock before.

I hope those pics work, sorry for the shakey hands, I think I was still rattled from the cops haha.

Great story, that is one of the funniest things I've heard in awhile.

I remember having a cop draw down on me while walking my dog at 2am on morning. He popped out from behind a corner and I almost had a heart attack, I was shaking for a bit after that heh.

Congrats on the free rocks btw!

thanks man, ya im still shook up haha but anyone know a really good way to clean them before putting them into a system to start some coraline growth on them?

What was the look on the cops face like when you told him you were picking up rocks. I can only imagine it. It must have be a priceless moment.

Nice story. That's gotta be worthy of a top ten list nomination somewhere. . .

Top 10 Things I Did to Save a Buck but Probably Should Have Thought Out First

If you use bleach make sure that none is "sealed" inside the rock. Maybe turning the rocks after 24 hours or so. It takes 24 hours for bleach to break down.

Oh man, I already had the sack in my trunk at the time he told me to put my hands on the hood of his car, and he asked what was in the bag when he was patting me down, and I said live rock.....

he was like "What is live rock?" I should have said, well I guess your not a reefer, but I dont like the feel of steel handcuffs on me so I explained, and he pretty much thought I was an idiot.

He told me not to go snooping around any more, and he searched my car, and let me go with a "warning" on trespassing haha.

But what do you mean by "cook it" stick it over some open flames in a gas grill/oven? Or put it in boiling water? I just want to kill everything on it

I don't think he saw the value of live rock...I mean that's a good 250 bucks but the cop didn't care.

IslandCrow: I am 100% sure most stories in this hobby that have to do with arrest would start out: well I was diving on this coral reef near (some place) and this patrol boat came up and wanted to look in the holds in my boat =)

Make up some saltwater in buckets, drop the rocks in with a powerhead and let em "cook" in the buckets for a couple of days.

I hate to say it but ur friend isn't to bright!

Regardless, when was the last time you got a treasure map, and found a couple hundred bucks worth of rock at the end ^^.

He happen to leave any around golden colorado.

Awsome story.

I have been down in key west and pulled over by a fish and game cop while on my buddies boat. It turns out we had this girl with us and she wanted to bring back some sand to put in a vase or something. She also picked up a couple dead fan corals that were laying on the beach on this little island we were at earlier. They made us dump the stuff into the ocean and leave the area. Not to mention we were pretty drunk also. It was a close one. If they only knew what I have collected in the keys back when I had my 125 gallon.....evil laugh...hehehehehehehe

Now thats funny.. Um where's this place at.. hehehe... looks around with shifty eyes... Yells to husband in other room... oh hunny wanna go for a drive?:)
