I have a gorgeous mantis i just caught from my 220. I already have a 10 with a mantis in it. I cant keep them together, because they will kill one another. Hes dark green with orange accents and spots on his smashers. Come pick him up.

How big is he? And what size tank could I keep him in? Have a pic you could send to me @?: "LoneRiderD@gmail.com"

Thanks,
Dave.

I have a 10 Gallon, that is just lit by some incantescent bulbs (Really Old freshwater tank I inherited from my homegirl), that I wouldn't mind keeping a couple small things in. Where are you at? When Can I pick him up? Does he require anything special?

i am in chuluota, right past oviedo. Thats what i have mine in a little 10 gallon i got from walmart with the cheap lights. I have a few rocks in there with him. But i have had him over a year. I just feed him chunks of shrimp and he eats hermits and snails. I do that just to keep him active. he also eats flakes to. Mine is truly entertaining to say the least. they are really intellegent animals. you would be surprised.

I got one of these in a 2.5 G and he is perfectly fine. He live with one big turbo and a lot of aiptasia and majano. Mantis shrimp, I think, are one of the coolest animals you will ever get the pleasure of watching. Get a few medium size or smaller hermit crabs and throw one in once in a while. You'll hear him cracking at the sheel all night. I also feed mine brine shrimp flakes which he loves. And every once in a while, I'll throw a freshwater feeder in there to watch his abilities of hunting. Really cool animals. I hope to get a spearer someday soon and see which is cooler.

A menace to a reef tank...but such an awesome animal. Did you know they have the fastest strike of any aquatic(not sure about land) animal.

They get up to 10 m/s. If you hit the ground after a full second of free-fall, you would hit with the almost same velocity as a mantis shrimp attack. You may not think this is much, but think of the fact that it took you one second through the force of gravity what they accomplish in under 3/1000 of a second. This means that the acceleration they receive is 3,333-5,000(depending on 2 or 3 milliseconds for attack) meters per second per second. Pretty fast in comparison to gravity's 9.8 meters per second per second

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/aquarius/raps.html :
Spearers are lightning-fast: it takes only two milliseconds (2/1000 of a second) for a spearer to extend its rap! In contrast, the blink of an eye is 100 milliseconds. The strike is similar to that of the insect praying mantis, which earned the stomatopods their common name of mantis shrimp, but the stomatopod strike is at least 10 times faster.

http://www.wildsingapore.com/chekjawa/text/g350.htm :
Mantis shrimps have other modifications that make them deadly predators. They have compound eyes that are considered among the most complex. They can see more colours than we can, and can see both UV and infra-red light. With just one eye, they already have binocular vision, important for accurately judging distance. So if they lose an eye, they can still hunt with the remaining eye!

I have one in my tank also that is coming out soon. He is pretty small. I think around 1". I have been to lazy to get him out of the 125 though. When he comes out someone can have him.
