So now that we all have one of these, can someone tell me what they can actually do?! I only bought one cause it was $0.72 and everyone else was buying it!!! Can it detect things like nitrates?

Not directly.
Tests for T otal D issolved S olids ('TDS'). Readings are given in p arts p er m illion ('ppm').
Not all total dissolved solids are bad, but in general the higher the TDS ppm, the poorer the quality of water.
Many people use them to test the water they use for mixing up seawater.

Can also test your top-off water. I do that even with the water I get from LFS and 'pure' water store. Have gotten some off batches on occasion.

I wouldn't know... I paid real money for my name brand meter, back before they gave the things away.

I am still unsure of the accuracy of mine. Says I have 5ppm coming from my ro system and 140 something coming out of my tap. But then it gives 6-700ppm in my freshwater tanks.
Anyone have a reliable one they would be willing to take to the meeting so we can all calibrate our free ones and see how bad they are off?
