Are they eating live food? If they are, you should be able to release them into the river, they are local to this area. How long have they been in captivity?

Will they do well in a home made pond? About 1,000 gal?

Yes but you would have to have a ton of leaf litter (about 3' deep) for them to hibernate in, or bring them in during the winter. They'd freeze solid. You'd also have to fence them in or they'll wander onto the street & become roadkill.

I would have to bring them in, the pond freezes too deep, but you know my son and his love of the things. And that would mean no fish either.
