Fresh veggies?

I have heard several ways to do this, so I'll ask away. What should be done to lettuce, or any other fresh veggies before adding to youre tank, basides the obvious washing of said veggie? I have heard that you have to freeze, then though out, and to blanch them. Which, If any is the good way to prepare them? Or are they safe for the fish?

That is also what I have heard. And I have read that if you freeze it or boil it first it will be easier for then to digest, I don't know if that is safe or not, so I asked those in the know, you guys.

Freezing or boiling softens the veggies by rupturing the cell wall. And whoever told you that fish can't digest "terrestrial" greens has either been deceived or seeks to deceive you.

Have you considered an alternative, such as dried Nori?
Since its marine alge its definitely a more appropriate food for your fish than lettuce.
You can usually find it at asian markets, health food stores and even at some major grocery chains.

Freezing is better then boiling as far as nutritional value. i was told for many, many, many, did i mention many? yrs that 'If you feed land based veggies to your tangs it's gonna kill em' well that's about as silly as saying eating fish will kill humans. my tangs have ate everything from every type of lettuce, spinach, bananas, oranges, etc..... it would be easier to say what they haven't ate then what all they have.

anyone who doubts that tangs can digest terrestrial plant forms, you're invited over a few hours after feeding time to see for yourself.

Remember feeding an Atlantic blue tang I used to have lettuce. It was lettuce in and lettuce out. Didn't looked like it changed at all.

LOL. Lettuce is to the tang as corn is to the human.

Ewww.

I blend up my own fish food and use softened nori and spinach in the mix. I just blanch the spinach for a couple of minutes first. Fish haven't had a problem with this at all.

Why would you feed the veggie with the lowest nutritional value? Lettuce is just a vehicle for blue cheese dressing.

I have been using nori ever since I got my firt tang, just seems like they are loosing intrest. So I thought I would mix it up a bit. So if I freeze then thaw it out I should be good right?

Yes. FWIW my tangs like Romaine and it's easy to just rubber band the stalks to a small rock and drop it in the tank, they'll strip it back to the stalk in a very short time then just pull the stalk out and toss it.

Animals can actually suffer from malnutrition by filling up on food with little or no nutritional value. Feeding lettuce to your fish is no different than feeding bleached white bread to ducks. It is bad for them!

so i guess i should take my tangs extended mid sections as a sign of malnutrition rather then obesity huh?

I didn't mean to offend you or call you a bad person... I'm sure your animals will be just fine. There are healthier snacks than lettuce. You can get a distended abdomen from eating 2 heads of lettuce but it does not mean that you will get any nutritional value from it. Your tang is fat and healthy in spite of the lettuce he snacks on... not because of it.

you can't play both sides of the fence, you say in one post you can't feed it to them because it's bad for them.........but mine is healthy even though it eats lettuce.....

why is it the people who say you can't feed your tang this and that are people who don't have tangs in the first place or only have 6 months to a year experience keeping marine fish??
