hello everyone i am almost positive the my yellow tang has ich would a fresh water dip cure it. It is nothing real bad but i don't want it to get worse. if the dip is a good solution what would the best way to go about it.
thanks

Generally it will help but as soon as you put him back in the tank they will still go nuts on him. A FWD is also stressful as well. If you were putting him into a QT tank then a FWD would benefit him before you treated with hypo or copper. I wouldnt do it and put him back in the main tank.

so it is in my tank not just on the tang? what is the best way to rid the stuff. i have live rock some damsels, two clowns, live rock and star fish.

I would do a search on ich. But basically it is in your tank now. Only way to get rid of it is go fishless for 6 to 8 weeks and treat the fish in a seperate tank with copper of hyposalinity. (1.009)

If you cannot do a QT tank, then garlic added to foods has been "said" to help although it is unknown.

It eats and lives off of the fish. When it reproduces, it drops the eggs into the sandbed. They can live down there until you have cleared your tank of them or you have removed your fish for a while(I believe four weeks, but I could be wrong and I am sure someone will chime in). A quarantine is the best solution to cure ich, but to fully rid yourself of it, you need to qt all the fish or somehow rid it of your tank. Do your have a reef setup, or is it fish only? On a FO tank, it is easier to rid, because there are more choices for treatment. Best bet is to set up a QT, find someone with a QT, or ask a fish store(very few, but some, will help).

Also, I see you have damsels. If you plan on putting a lot of peaceful fish in your tanks, I would recommend getting them out beforehand. Hyposalinity seems to work to cure ich, but still need a qt to do so. Someone more proficient than I could chime in to help you out.

Rang in before I could...just saw your last post before I wrote my last one. Because you have a starfish, rules out most treatments besides time...Sorry about the bad luck.

I've tried garlic and it helps build the immune system but it will not completely stop the ich. Ich also hides in the gills so you may think its gone and it will come back twice as strong. People give up this hobby because they cannot get rid of ich but if you treat correctly you can.

I'd recommend hypo or copper in a qt tank.

Anyone ever heard of using formalin? The risks say not to use on liverock, but wondered why? What does it really do if you don't necessarily have corals on them? I bought a bottle of the stuff awhile ago online, but by the time it got here my puffer was already dead from it. After I read it, figured I could never use the stuff anyways because what saltwater tank DOESN'T have LR? lol.

Formalin is a saturated solution of formaldehyde, water, and typically another agent, most commonly methanol. In its typical form, formalin is 37% formaldehyde by weight (40% by volume), 6-13% methanol, and the rest water. It is not used to cure ich at all. It is known to help against certain diseases. I would personally not use it in your main tank and pull the affected fish out and treat for the recommended amount of time depending on the disease/affliction. It seems difficult to get around here though.

i think i have found the cause. a fairly new clown fish i noticed has ich on it and now the tang does to. but so i think starting a QT tank is the only sure fire way? but what about all these reef safe ich treatments what is the word on those?

ICK medicines

ICK medicines

Ick Attack was the only thing I was recommended to buy at the time my fish had ick. It is 100% organic so its safe for reef tanks as well as FOWLR. So this is what I tried first. Unfortunately, many bottles later, it did absolutely nothing for the ick on my fish, they died anyways almost 2 weeks into it.
I also tried the freshwater dip on the puffer, only because I was desperate and he appeared to be on his last fin anyways, he was completely covered in white spots all over, even his lips, and a 'webby' slime on him as well, which is why nothing worked probably. Oh well, if it ever happens again, I'll try the hyposalinity since I was informed that the formalin I bought ISN'T for ick as it was advertised! Full bottle sitting here for nothing. Anyone know exactly what it CAN be used for?

Formaldehyde (main ingredient in Formalin) is a potent disinfectant and anti-bacterial agent but has little to no effect as a fungicide, insecticide, or larvacide. Formalin is effective for gill flukes, surface infections, and other parasites, but won't work on argulus, fish lice, and other macro-parasite. Also, it has no bearing on mold and fungus-related problems. I do use it to treat fish with flukes so that once the fluke is removed, the tissue is then filled with the Formalin which then resists secondary infection.

Use caution, though, when using Formalin as Formaldehyde “kills” bacteria in an unconvertional manner. Most anti-bacterial/germicidal agents poison bacteria and germ cells. Formaldehyde, though, "kills cell tissue by dehydrating the tissue and bacteria cells and replacing the normal fluid in the cells with a gel-like rigid compound.

"Tissue and bacterium cells are made of protoplasm and as such, contain large amounts of moisture. The introduction of formaldehyde into the tissue dries out the protoplasm and destroys the cell," says Thomas B. Waltzek M.S. and Ronald P. Hedrick Ph.D. "Additionally, the “new” cell structure will resist further bacterial attacks as its composition now contains a formaldehyde-based compound."

Most anti-bacterial agents (such as tetracycline) poison bacterial infections and are then flushed from the system but Formalin is retained in the tissue.

Thanks Marcye!
I guess I will have no use for it then. I don't think I've ever had fish with flukes yet.
I have only ever seen ick, mouth & tail rot.
Unless..........
What are those red things that can be on the sides of fish. They kind of look like microscopic worms? Is that flukes? I've seen that once, but somehow the fish rid itself of that in a few days without treatment. It was on a yellow tang.

i had an ich problem for a while and i got a UV sterilizer within 3 days, no more ich and have never cought ich again, knock on wood.

I am currently treating for ick, in fact, just yesterday I got my QT down to 1.009 My display(65g) will remain fishless for 8 weeks. My 55g fowlr will go through hyposalinity also. I made the mistake of adding some liverock without treating it. I strongly recommend a QT. It was a pain to remove everything from the display just to catch the fish, but in a couple of months all my tanks will be ich free.
