Fresh water to salt

I like the saltwater tanks so much, I turned my 30 gallon fresh water into salt on Sunday. My plan is for this to be a fowlr tank, but wouldn't be surprised if it switches down the road to have some corals. I set it up yesterday and just added the sand. Today I added some live rock, but will need to add more. I did buy live sand, which I plan to put on top of the sand I already have in there. I haven't added the live sand yet, because I want to get additional live rock and didn't want to be stirring it up after the live sand is in there. This is right, right? With the live rock and live sand, how long should I wait before adding the first fish? I want a pearl jawfish, and wasn't sure if this should be the first fish added? Also, where did you get your ideas for aquascaping? I thought I had that all planned out, then looked at the rock in the tubs and had trouble deciding.

When you say you bought live sand , do you mean the stuff in the bags? if so see if you can return it, the stuff is worth less and will extend your cycle by many weeks, I would add the extra live rock any time and let the tank cycle, if you need some true live sand to seed the tank i am sure many of us can give you a cup or so to get started which is all you need

Usually you would want to let it cycle for awhile and then start with a damsel of some sort. If I were you I'd wait for a little while before you put in the pearl jawfish...

Sand and Live Rock are all you need to cycle the tank adding a Damsel is a Novice mistake, they get very territorial and are hard to remove, she has a beautiful 55g mixed reef and she should follow what she did with that tank

Thanks Oldreefer, I'm pretty happy with the 55. I'll do the live rock and let it cycle. I have no experience with this live sand, and wasn't sure it would cycle any faster. I'll have to be patient.:)

Thanks eyeseeu. That fish will be good in a peaceful tank? I want the jawfish for sure and then I'm undecided. Firefish?

Live sand is something of a ripoff unless its straight out of a well cared for LS tank and full of things like hair worms and other good critters. Bagged ls usually is not. You are essentially paying for less sand per pound, since a significant amount of the bag is water and the live part is generally... just bacteria. Which you can get anywhere.

thank u eyeseeu. chromis are fine fish , very hardy and are damsels.. they are a sight if you put more than one as they will swim as a school.
