freshwater dip for new clam???

I will get a new clam from a member so...should I dip it in freshwater for a few minutes? I think I read (or I dreamed) this was a good idea. Is this true?

Fresh water will most likely harm the animal. If you're concerned about introducing pests into your tank, use a quarantine tank.

I dont think i would tryit. it would have to be completely closed for me to do that, because mine never closes when i touch it.?
