Freshwater Lobsters?

Well from what I can gather it's called an Australian Ghost Lobster. It's from north eastern Australia and will grow to over 12 inches. It is one of if not the largest member of the crayfish family so technically not a lobster but he sure is quite neat. It is completely bleach white and you can see his heart beating under his carapace (or is it a thorax). It doesn't bother fish and is very easy to breed as the larva eat flake food. My reason for the post is that I think that Barry sold several of these and if any of you guys have one maybe we could try to get something going as far as captive breeding once they grow out. I have been told they are quite rare. I just think it might be fun to try it out. BTW if you ever want to breed something and can't differentiate the sexes get at least 6 of them. I wish I would've with this guy, he (and Ron) got me back into freshwater. Check'm out...

Cool photo. A friend of mine picked up one of those from Jo-Mars as well for his 30G tank. He had it over a month and says it has doubled in size already. It has eaten a few of his fish and eat most of his live plants. Funny thing is that he likes the lobster but feels he will need to take it out before it starts gets much bigger and becomes more aggressive.

I had to remove mine from my 75 plant tank, I had some fish going DOA so I moved him to a tank filled with cherry shrimp for the time being. Taz, yours is a baby, wait till you see how those claws look in another 2 months. Probably won't expect to find any at least until early next spring if then, you know collectors and trends. I like the idea of raising these guys, so maybe we'll get lucky next season with that.

Fish eater.... plant eater..... Hmmm. Well my Mollies do reproduce rather abundantly so...... And I could consolidate my two mollie tanks into one... Yeah I'm still interested in getting one. carb let me know if you decide to get rid of yours.

He has nibbled down on some plants, but I've been luckiy so far with the fish. I still would be interested in another carb as this was the reason for the freshy tank anyway... everything else is sort of secondary. He really seems to like krill as a treat. I'm just trying to keep him full so he doesn't start in on the fish. Lemme know if you bud wants to get rid of it... thx

The guy I know that has one is on vacation this week. He really likes the lobster but for said reasons is thinking about trying to find him a new home. He if he decides to do it, I will post it on the board for him.

Barry showed me one of those last time I was there. I figured with claws like that it would be a fish eater. Very cool looking though.

Here's a more recent photo of the freshwater lobster now known as "Yeti". He's recently molted and is pushing 6 1/2 inches. Notice the sharp point on it's claw. He has become a full fledged hunter now as well as a gardener. So I am in the process of setting up another tank to seperate it from his expensive eating habits. He'll take a veggie wafer from your hand. Very cool critter...

I just noticed this - you can see the growth in this guy if you compare the first photo to the last one... Just look at the veggie wafer he is eating in either shot. I just threw the wafer in the tank in both shots to get him to come out of his hiding spot for the photo. Not bad for a months growth .... like a weed...

Well I set up my first freshwater CO2 system on the tank the other day and everything seems to be working well. The bad thing is that Yeti decided to crawl out of the tank using the CO2 supply line and "asphyxiated" himself on his little journey across my office floor. I had figured out how much to feed him to keep him from bothering most of his tankmates and plants and he was doing really well. All I can say is that I am completely bummed out about this. I have a glass top on the tank but he managed to get out the back by the filter. I will miss the little dude....

Damnit, I want a minilobster now!
Now I got to go and get a tank and a lobster... this will be so cool....
DUDE! I wonder if you could teach it to do magic tricks....

Oh, and nice setup Taz. Very nice. Sorry for your loss. He was a very nice, beautiful creature.

Reviving an old thread.

My friend decided to sell his white FW Lobster. If anyone is interested, PM me for contact information.

Bump again.

The owner to this Freshwater Lobster is more motivated now. He just hopes to find it a good home. Be aware, he is a fish eater. PM me if your interested.

Um, I don't know that it is spelled out anywere. I believe he is in a 35G +/- now but every time the guy adds a new fish it gets an unpleasant surprise overnight. The fish he had awhile know better. I haven't seen it for some time but I would guess it is maybe 6" long?
