Hi all,
I have a question about daily topping off my aquarium with freshwater.
I used to run a sump and I do all the top off there at the sump. However, I am no long running a sump and all I have with my system is one hang on UV sterilzer and one hang on skimmer.
So far I have no fish or invert in the tank as it just finished cycling. All I have in the tank now is live rocks.
My question is, so far I have been doing my top off straight to the tank itself, however, later on when I start having fish or invent in the system, does it pose any kind of danger to the livestock if I just dump freshwater in the tank like what I have been doing?
A long time ago I used to keep a smaller system (45g) and I did the same thing when topping off the system (straight to the tank). I notice a lot of fishes get confused and think that I'm feeding them. As a result, they usually dash right into the adding freshwater. I didn't notice any ill effect back then, but I wasn't that good a fish keeper back then either.
So, is that going to hurt them?? Is that like suddenly exposing them into water with different chemistry? My freshwater is treated with RO and adjusted to the same temperture, but I haven't adjust the pH since I always thought when it mix with the salt and the saltwater in the system the pH will adjust by itself, much like when I mix new saltwater for water change.
Am I worrying too much? Does water mixes much faster than I think? Or should I prevent this? If so, any sugguestion? Should I pour the top off water into the skimmer instead so it can be mix for at least a bit before it comes out?
Sorry for the long post but thanks so much for reading!
