Frog Fish

Hello I am new to this forum so please bear with me if I have posted this in the wrong location. I recently bought a frog fish from the LPS and once i got him back to my office, i let him acclimate to the tank and then put him in. There are plenty of small fish and lots of ghost shrimp for him to feed on. It has been one week now and I think he has feed on his own however two days ago I came into my office and he was really bloated and basically standing on his head but he is still alive, he is breathing. What is wrong with him and is there anything I can do for him? Please let me know soonest, thanks!

I would post this in the fish disease section.

I can't tell you for sure but it could be a few things. How many shrimp were in there and what size frog do you have? They, like lions, can be glutens to the point that it can harmful to them. Also, is it possible that it consumed substrate while engulfing the shrimp? Could it have eaten a hermit crab (i've seen before)? None of those scenarios have a solution for you right now but the fish could have a bladder infection and that can be treated. Good luck

thanks for the info, well a lot of the shrimp i put in there died, not sure why! No hermit crabs so that is not it. not sure what to do, but i will look in the area you said, thanks again!

You mention: plenty of fish and shrimp to eat. I don't know if you meant that the shrimp died and you found them dead, but to me it sounds as if the frogfish has overeaten. I have mine since April 2011 and I have found that if the frogfish feeds, it is really easy to overfeed.

If the rest of the tank looks healthy, I would ensure the fish can not eat more for the coming few days (maybe even weeks). With some luck, the situation will improve.

Feeding once every week is enough, you don't want the fish to become skinny, but a fat belly all the time is not good either.

Good luck :)
