Frogfish

My boyfriend just bought me a black frogfish who is about 6" long but I don't know anything about frogfish. I tried to identify him and I think he is a giant but I'm not sure. He seems to be quite happy and has been eating fine but I was wondering if anyone who has a frogfish could fill me in on your experience, basic likes, dislikes, diet etc.?

If possible, take it back until you can do alot of research.

They demand a species only tank, are VERY intolerant of copper and even low nitrates, water temp changes of just a few degrees and water flow.

It's very difficult to name species, as most are only identifiable because of their illium and esca.

It is possible for you to provide pics of it?

Also...tell your boyfriend no more impulse buys. lol

Thank You for the info. I've only had him for three days so I will call the store my boyfriend bought him from and see if they will take him back. I would hate to have him die because of my inexpierence. He is just tooooo cool.

I do have a few pix but in order to post them here they have to be at such a low res. he just looks like a block blob. If you have somewhere else I can send or post them I'd be glad to send or post them them.

Thanks Again :0)

If it over 6" I would say its a Commerson's Frogfish. It is often found off the Hawaiian islands. I won't say its over demanding. But I would say its going to need to be in a Species Tank, because It will get EVERYTHING. And I mean everything, even other frogfish.

At 6", it could also be a large, adult A. nummifer, too.

If it's a Commersons, you're looking at a potential 12" - 14" eating machine that'll be able to devour fish it's own size.

They're truly fascinating fish and one of my favs...I've kept 6 - 8 different species.

This is an excellant site, that'll help with I.D. and also give lots of other great info about Frogs.
