Frogspawn Concern

I have 4 heads of frogspawn on two separate branches. The largest branch has what I can only observe to be brown sponge on it. The heads are not receding or reacting as if stressed. The brown is spongy to the touch and is not slimy at all. The last time this happened I took a toothbrush (new) and brushed it off outside the tank and dipped it. As this is reoccurring and does not appear to be brown slime - am I wasting my time? or should the branches always be clean. I checked on wet web media and most responses are for brown slime. Thanks for taking the time to respond, I appreciate others experiences.

I spoke with my LFS and they confirmed it is sponge and that the way I was handling it was fine. Toothbrush and a dip to keep the sponge in check. Perhaps this will benefit someone else if they have the same concern.
