frogspawn

hey guys, my 10 gallons cycle is complete, and im going to go out tonight to get a frogspawn. i have my two ocellaris clowns in my QT and i have a few questions. Shoudl i add my clowns before, after, or at the same time as the frogspawn? and should i do a water change before adding the clowns or frogspawn or dont worry abotu that? Oh and last, what should i feed the frogspwn and how what is the best way of acclimationg it?...Thanks!

i would wait to let the frogspawn get adjusted to its new environs first before adding the clowns.

as a habit i try to do a water change before adding any corals, i'm sure it doesn't make that much of a difference though as long as your water parameters are very good.

frogspawn is usually considered a moderately difficult species to keep.

i feed my frogspawn by going to the grocery store and buying fresh shrimp (i'm on the gulf coast so i don't know if fresh is available in your area, frozen should be ok too) and cutting a small piece off and placing it on the top of the frogspawn once the lights are out and it has shrunken down to night time size. you may have to hold the shrimp there for a little while to get the FS to accept the food but mine seems to love the shrimp.

as far as acclimating it, i float the bag for a while till the temps equalize then i open the bag and use some sort of clip to hold it to the side of the tank, then i add 1/2 cup of tank water every 5 mins till the bag is full, dump out half the water and do it again, after the bag has been filled with tank water twice then you can set the frogspawn on the tank bottom.

i usually leave a new coral on the bottom of the tank for a week so that it gets used to the lighting in the tank and then place them higher in the rock work, taking time to leave them in middle zone if it is going to go to the top of the tank.

hope that helps, i was where you were a few months ago and found out all this stuff about FS. i want to get another FS and a hammer coral next, i love the euphyllia!

hah awesome thanks. however, when taking it out of the bag, should i use a glove and hold it by the rock or what?

well, if possible, i would definitely hold it by the rock, base, or skeleton. if you have to touch the tentacles, do it very gently.

on my specimen, there was very little skeleton so i had to touch the tentacles. i was careful and it didn't seem to hurt the guy at all. it won't sting you but they will stick to your hand.

Have any of you guys tride ZOPLAN from two little fishies? I dont feed my frogsprawn any thing special,I got him a year and half ago he had 3 heads on him, now he's got 24 heads on him (he's freaking huge) also got a branching hammer same day with 2 head's now he's got 18 heads on him. the only two lps's that I target feed is my open brain and my green bubble, I feed them krill once a week. All of my live stock seem to enjoy the ZOPLAN.

when do you feed the zoplan? its my understanding that frogspawn only eat at night, they are not coaxed out to feed during the day like some other LPS coral are. unless you are feeding at night i would not attribute your growth to the food. you must have a good lighting system with good water.

not trying to hijack thread, but what do you mean by extend to feed at night. I understand there are sweepers, but in my frogspawn, the tentacles are much more expanded during the day. At night, it extends some skinnier, shorter ones, but after a while they shrink in. Is this normal? I try to feed late in the day marine snow...

reefy:

Frogspawns do not extended to feed at night, some other LPS do. Frogspawns normally shrink up to 75% at night time, this is perfectly normal, and this is when they should be fed.

ok, and what do i feed it besides snow. I tried feeding it mysis, and it'd grab onto it, but eventually after like 5-10 mins, it just blew off, and the powerheads aren't even really blowing on it. It just sort of lets go after a while. Any help here?

I feed my actually cut pieces of shrimp from the grocery store, and when I do that I turn ALL powerheads off in the tank, there is absolutely no flow, and even then sometimes the FS lets go. I actually think a little chunk of food is better than something like snow cause you actually can see it eat. I have no idea how these things eat in the wild, cause like you said, with any flow food seems to blow off. Perhaps in the wild they get much less flow than we think.

I feed mine clownfish everyonce and a while hahaha

nice frogspawn, looks like you got it semi-bleached but helped it restore. I'll try feeding mysis w/ no pumps fierce, and "sea" if that works:D But i'm gona continue feeding snow as well. How much did you get that FS for Mofo? I have 4 to choose from, and one of em is cheap but colorless (hence the brown+white tip frogspawn i have) and the other 3 are more expensive. While one of them stocks much less, only has 3 coral tanks, about 100 diff. corals, and charges much more for prettier corals. Any suggestions as to good ways to purchase corals? I heard online is not a great way to go.

I tend to feed ZOPLAN about three times a week, usally at the time my lights start to power down. Allso I feed phyto every day, 1/2 cup one day lights on, next day lights off. I repete this on a daily cycle. Plus I do a 30g. water change every Sunday, useing Tropic marin pro reef salt.
