Frogspawn

Well, right now only corals i have in my tank are polyps, mushrooms, and a head of xenia. Im planning on a peice of frogspawn in the tank, but have just 1 question on it. My LFS store keeper told me that i dont need to check calc, mag, and the other one for softies. And my corals seem to be doing excellent! Now i was wondering if Frogspawn applies to this?

Unfortunately for you, the frogspawn does have a skeleton. So yes you should be checking on your levels. Even some softies you should be checking levels for because they use spicules (little calcium pieces) for rigidity. Mushrooms, and zoos don;t have them so no worries there. But for the frogspawn.. yes you should be checking for it.

i have a huge frogspawn and i dont check for anything and its doing healthy and growing like crazy. I basically just do my monthly water change and its probably getting what it needs from the trace elements in the salt. But im also running 2 NO bulbs along with 2 T5 bulbs, but i doubt thats doing anything as far as keeping it healthy.

You will need to check these. Frogspawn have calcium based skeletons so they need calcium to grow. They don't use Mg (i dont think) but you will need higher levels to keep your Ca and kH level.

It would be a good idea to pick up a Ca, kH and Mg test kit. I have found that API Ca and kH test kits are pretty good for under 10 bucks (around 6 bucks on www.drsfostersmith.com)

Leathers have the spicules I was talking about, but in general even if half your tank was filled with leathers the depletion wouldn't be that bad (Calcium depletion). Standard water changes should be fine, and if you can (and to make your life easier) add an auto top-off and use Kalkwasser... it's easy, good for the tank, and saves you work plus time.

I do 2 gallon water change every week. Now about the leather, this is all i test for. Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ph, salinity. Is that ok for a leather? I just want that to be all the testing i do.

As I suggested in another thread, plus what's in my sig. go over to the chemistry forum and read some articles in the sticky. It will answer a lot of your questions :)

If your WC make your tank look good I say great. Even if you add a coral I think 12% weekly is pretty good for what you have.

I do a 10% water change weekly and I only test for salinity. I have all softies...with a little sps that is thriving. I do sparingly feed only only have 4 small fish so I don't have a lot of gunk in my tank.
