FS - Scribbled Rabbitfish - Doliatis

I bought a Scribbled Rabbitfish (Siganus doliatus) from Hector last week. Since that time he has decided to mow down my mushrooms. He is a bit thin so this could be out of hunger. However, I have trapped him and moved him temporarily to my refugium to eat some macro. I hate to take him back as he has been stressed enough.

I paid $39.99 last week and am willing to sell it at $25 or trades.

He would make an excellent addition to a FOWLR. However, I have to say at this point, he is NOT reef safe.

Here's some info for anyone who doesn't know about these fish.

"Rabbitfish are typically considered reef-safe as they will ignore invertebrates. If not fed multiple times daily, they may choose to graze on some corals, including Soft Corals and Large Polyped Stony Corals. The spines of the Rabbitfish are venomous. So the Rabbitfish should always be handled with great care. Though a peaceful species, Rabbitfish are often kept quite compatibly with more aggressive species who do not bother it due to the stinging spines."

man that stinks, i think you would have been happy he mowed down your mushrooms

I have the same fish and he is an algae eating machine, he decimated a bubble algae problem in a few weeks. :)

I think he might have taken a few chunks from my clam too:(

UMMM Jeff as "salesman of the year" ... I think not.

Is there anything positive you can give us to want this fish? LOL

I guess a FOWLR with algae probs is ideal.

I know, I thought about that. However, I really didn't want anyone to get it under false pretenses. Worst case is I can take it back and probably get store credit. However, I think a FOWLR situation would work very well for this fish.

And yes, he is up for rent for $5/mo with a 5 month minimum.

Did you have any luck with it eating hair algea? I have some green hair algea that I have a hard time getting to by hand. I know Andy has had pretty good succsess with his. Any chance you could email me a picture of the fish, or is it the same exact coloration as listed above in itzme's response?

I can say pretty confidently that I think he'll go for hair algae. He has been nipping at both the hair algae and caulerpa that grow in my fuge. He is agressive enough eater that I trapped him on the first attempt with a fish trap baited with nori. I think the problem was actually my tang. I put 2 nori clips in the tank at each end and the tang aggressively defended both and wouldn't let the rabbitfish eat.

As far as coloration goes, he is close to the 2nd. I figure he is a subadult as he is about 4-5" in length. The blue lines are present but not predominant. I'll try to get a good pic of him. Unfortunately, my refugium is pretty overgrown so getting a decent shot might be difficult.

I have a friend who keeps one rabbit fish, 2 snails and one crab in his 75 gallon fuge/sump. He says he doesn't need to trim his macro back or clean much of anything in his sump. Just a suggestion on behalf of serpentman... you can keep this fish in a sump until such time you need him to do some mowing in the main tank. Corner him and toss him back into the sump.

I would venture to say that is not a real good life for a fish.

Plus the fact that it has venomous dorsal spines

Mike, I will be around weekend, give me a shout if you'd like to come out.

I really don't want to keep him in the refugium indefinitely. Although its a 55g, it can hold him for a while. However, its lit 24/7 which is stressful for it. Also, it doesn't help nutrient export if he's eating the macro.
