full-feature compact vs DSLR - for aquarium and other shots

I'm looking to get a used camera to use for occasional photography. nothing fancy but still a serious camera. The canon G15 and Canon 40D with a basic lens are both right in my price range.

If I get an SLR I will probably only ever own one lens. This seems to me like a good reason to just buy the G15, because it will be a better all-around camera, and it has a very fast lens.

Thoughts?

The G 15 is a very capable camera. If you don't want to get into changing lenses, it's most likely your best bet.

thanks guys. i actually have a G7 that I still love. I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't be missing out on too much if I stick with a non-SLR camera. it sounds like I won't regret the G15.

If you don't think you'll ever get anything more than the stock lens, I'd recommend the G series as well just for ease. I own a 40D, and although it's definitely a bit dated, it's really a good camera. The biggest advantage it's going to have is image quality. That bigger sensor just produces a better image than many of the most modern compact cameras (though they're starting to make more and more compact/bridge cameras with APS-C sensors). The 40D really shines when using a top-end lens, though. So, take away that factor, and the image quality difference between the two cameras isn't going to be as noticeable.

I'm a Nikon user. I have a D300 and five lens', but it's been my hobby for over forty years. I wanted something small but full featured. I went with a Nikon P7700. as good as the Canon but with more range. I can also use the compact with with my two flashes. but really, you can't compare either with a dslr. you can get an all around Zoom for most photos and a cheap/used macro for tank closeups. it doesn't have to be all that expensive.
