Funds For Raffle

We have been talking about how much to spend on the up coming raffle so I just counted the cash and we have $1260. I think we can spend more than the $500 we initially talked about. Especially because we're pushing the meeting back to October.

Also please pay it forward. If you have won a nice piece in the raffle cut a piece and bring it. If you have some nice stuff in you're tank donate a frag to the raffle. Everyone should be bringing a few nice pieces to every raffle that has a flourishing tank.

does the board hold on to any type of prudent reserve? I mean, are there really any operating costs aside from shirts and stuff for the raffles?

Other than the board's once a year trip to Cabo, no there are no operating costs.

You all do know I'm kidding about the trip to Cabo, right? :)

In the last few raffles we have made slightly more money than we spent. A nice trend. Let's keep it up so we can bring in more great corals!

Perhaps the club could have a "most wanted list" put together by members of corals we'd like to see in the club? It might be a good way to get new lines of corals into our club.

For each meeting, the coral on the top of the list is purchased, possibly fragged if large enough, raffled off and one new item would be added to the list.

By keeping it to one new coral a meeting the club coffers wouldn't be drained too quickly. If funds get low, the program could be discontinued until funds rebound. On the positive side, it might generate more raffle ticket sales which might possibly enable the purchase of more than one new coral for a given meeting.

SWK We're not that organized to have a required reserve. We actually have more in the fund after a meeting than we ever had and need to put it to work. Remember we also bought a PAR meter this year and a saw a year or so ago.

That's the reason for the post. We have a larger reserve than we ever had and should put it to work.

Again please remember to donate to the raffle it's will come back to you.

Also remember to donate pieces especially of things you've won in the raffle. That's required.

Seems like an awful large amount to spend on coral, that is, if we spend beyond the original funds allocated. Would there be any benefit to doing more equipment?

My take is generally most people already have the equipment they need or have special requirements. Equipment in my mind tends to be useless unless you are literally just starting out. (In which case, I would be hesitant to give a newbie "difficult/sensitive" corals.

Stick with easy ones, get your husbandry skills under your belt, then take the harder stuff.

I would say live coral food, BRS dosing compounds (for balance maintenance) is always used by reefers to adjust their calcium/alk balance, coral dip, salinity meter for those that don't have one, pH probes since they wear out,...

Those are in my opinion useful "consumables"

Oh! And frag plugs and fragging equipment. I have mentioned this in past. This encourages fragging! Also include googles for zoa cutting

@Zero

I'm not sure what you are advocating in these three posts. Are you saying the club should have consumables available for members to use? Or are you advocating consumables as raffle prizes?

So far our purchases have been durable items, PAR meter and bandsaw.

I'm going to keep it simple. Do big frag packs from vendors like we are doing and when we find one that comes through stick with them. Seems like the last four vendors we weren't really happy with. Seems like this process works so why stop it now.

If we want a nice designer frag $100 plus per frag. Give it to a member that has years of success. Once they can frag 1-2 frags let them keep the main portion for growing it out for the club as a thank you. Again this is my opinion.

I'm with Dragon on keeping it simple with continuing to purchase large frag orders from vendors. It allows us to bring some really nice coral into the club that our members can grow and share once they are able to frag(this is key to the success of our club!). It's a beautiful thing to see how generous our members are with the caliber of some of the corals you see at our meeting.

I do like the idea of a most wanted list to help the BOD in choosing coral that the members really want. Just keep in mind, the BOD puts a lot of time and effort into organizing and arranging these orders to provide corals that our members will find pleasing. We've had some purchases in the past that really didn't go well and it can be beyond frustrating that a vendor can treat a club with such disregard. I've had some long and drawn out email battles with vendors because of this. With that said, I was really pleased how well John at GoldenGateCorals provided for our club with the purchase for the last meeting.

Collin good point about the vendors. We should continue to support the vendors who take care of us. The more business you give them the better we'll be treated.

I don't know.

Have you ever ordered from them?

They seem very colorful. Can the pics be trusted or are they someone's photoshop dream? :)

The only online vendor I have purchased from is Vivid and the experience was positive overall. I did have a jedi mind trick show up on deaths door, but they promptly refunded the money for that piece.

Unique seems to have a solid rep, as I have not seen a negative review anywhere. I will be ordering from there next time as the shipping to california is 15 bucks and free at 150 dollars or something.

Anyway - there are a few vendors out there that I would like to see stuff from, but I'm sure you guys have it covered, that is, in between trips to cabo and vegas
