fungia problem

My tank is a DSB and every time I've put a fungia or cycloresir there the underneeth side tissue is eliminated I do not know for what a reason. I thought it was due to fireworms but I have never seen one near the fungias, so maybe the reason is any toxic released by the sand bed (very unlikely.

To tell you the thouth I do not know if this problem is unic in my tank or if other aquarist have experienced this situation.

Some of the fungia die after some moths with this condition but others rebuild the tissue and grow.

Any idea about the problem or how to solve it?

Maybe you have a disease in your tank? By you keep adding more fungia, it keeps the pathogen alive. Some can fight it off, others can't, may not have to do with the DSB at all. Just a guess obviously, others will chime in though.

Do you have a lot of amipods? I found them eatting my gonipora in a tank that didn't have a fish to keep the population in check.

I do not think it is a desease because between the first case (some years ago) and the next (last year and this year) I haven't had fungias on the tank. With rspect to amfipods I have 4 fishes on my tank (bicinctus, novaculichtis, flavescens and another labroid) that are all the time looking for small critters.

I tend to think there is something in the aquarium that make the contact between the sand bed and the tissues risky for the corals. I have seen many spaguetti worms coming out from the sand by night and I do not know if they could in a way or another damage the corals.

My sand is partially coming directly from Australia and the Caribean. I brought from there coming back from hollidays so the fauna should be more complex than the one coming from comercial living sand. In fact I have seen explosions of red fether dusters and other critters.

Any view?
