Had I drank too much beer or did Rich say something about posibly having Jean-Michel Cousteau speak at one of our meetings? and if this is the case when is it going to be?
Those two things aren't mutually exclusive. ;-) But yes - Rich said that Marc is trying to get Jean-Michel Cousteau to our next meeting. Jean-Michel will be in in town during the week of our meeting, and so we're going to give it a shot.
Mr. Cousteau will be in town Wednesday the 15th as the speaker in the Sacramento Speakers Series. I extended an offer to him to extend his Sacramento stay and join us for the evening. I received an e-mail back from his exec. assistant, and she told me that she had sent my request on to Mr. Cousteau for consideration. I have since sent two e-mails to his assistant asking if she ever heard back from Mr. Cousteau. So far they have not responded.
Hey Alex, You should come to the March meeting since there won't be a meeting in April. With the WMC (April 21-23, $100 for MARS members) we can't do a club meeting in the same month. Of course if you wanted to sign up for the WMC I bet Minh could hook you up.
thanks Jenny, I was kind of turned off by car sales pitch, or maybe it was more like an oxiclean infomercial...either way I re-read through our next speaker's background and was happy to see some Galapagos experience coming our way (that sounds really cool) I'll be there!
Oh, geez I may have to sit myself in the corner again...
I'm sorry, I guess I'm coming down with something so I may be a little moody this has been coming through in my posts...One of the reasons for my above post is that we as addicted and certified reef enthusiast don't need to be convinced on how great it would be to have a public aquarium close by, we already know and agree. The presentation we saw seemed like something you would show the County Board of Supervisors in order to convince them. It all just seems like a sales pitch when it wasnt needed. More importantly would have been the intimate details of their systems and how they are benefiting the marine enviroment and/or hobby and other things of the sort. I was sold before they even started no need to pound the benefits of a new aquarium for 2 hours. I really appreciate what they are doing. and hope to see it get off the ground.
Alex - interesting that we had a completely different view about the last speaker. I actually really enjoyed it a lot. I never knew how much work and commitment it took to build a public aquarium. I didn't see the last presentation as "them" trying to sell the idea of a public aquarium to us - but it was bout the process of building a public aquarium.
Our next speaker, Drew Weiner (Director of RPI), will be presenting on Reef Protection International, and their work...as well as their Reef Fish Guide. For those that have not done so, please go to www.reefprotect.org and fill out their survey.
I do not believe that he will be covering any of his work in the Gallapgos, but he would certainly be open to some question afterwards.
Cool thanks!, my .02 + your .02 = .04 at least my math is correct
can't make everyone happy all of the time, must be that 80% rule
the way I see it, I'm glad you guys are here to lend an ear, otherwise I'd look pretty silly talking to myself
Oddly enough, I saw it the exact same way as did Minh. In fact, I was shocked at how they weren't really asking us for anything (besides a coral custodian program, which in my opinion is pretty innocuous). Oh well, just a different angle I guess.
Unfortunately, I never received any response from his foundation other than the one e-mail after my initial inquiry. I sent numerous e-mails and left two voice messages since then and no one ever responded.
I heard a rumor that Jean-Michel isn't a fan of public aquariums, and I can guess what he might think of us hobbyists. So our March speaker is Drew Weiner, of Reef Protection International.
