Future TOTM Material...

Hey Everyone,

During a game of poker GMNeil was telling me about this guy's build thread on RC. He's a couple hours north of us, but he has one of the most insane setups (and houses) that I've ever seen. It's a thread that started less than a month ago and is already over 40 pages long.

Grab a cold one and check it out... this first picture on his thread should sum it all up!

I saw that thread but I didn't read all of the posts (there's a ton of fluff).

Has this person ever owned a reef aquarium prior to this build?

Gary I skimmed thru the posts and I believe he does have a current tank. Also you are right, a ton of fluff in that thread. Still in incredible build.

The answer to your question is no, he has not had a reef tank before. He has however hiried a full time fish guy to aid in the effort. so far it appears hes on the right path time will tell.

I bet it would be easy to get TOTM when money is no object lol..I wonder if he hires someone to maintain that thing?

I disagree about getting TOTM just because you have money- that's why I wondered if this guy had a reef aquarium before OR if he had someone else taking care of this for him.

awesome thread.. anyone notice that it has almost as many views as this entire URS forum has replies?

as do i, but its going to be spectacular i believe. and with this money hes spending on this tank, i dont see why he couldnt get someone to take care of it for him. if only it was me...

well i guess it is good that some people out there are pouring huge money into the hobby, but for me and I can say many others this hobby is about 90% behind the scenes of messy, stinky and a whole bunch of gratifying learning about marine life and 10% Ooo pretty tank..

Guys like this kinda remind me of those big game hunters, that go to a ranch in Texas and shoot big game on a leash and proudly hang it on the wall..

Or those guys that buy a 69 camaro at one of those auctions completely done with never in their life getting grease under th fingernails..

Maybe I'm just a jealous?? who knows lol

TOTM should be Reefkeeper of the month IMHO

agreed. If the aquarium owner ever wins TOTM the honors actually go to the caretaker.

FWIW you don't need a huge expensive state of the art system to win TOTM and THAT'S what makes the award even more special IMO.

i can't hate on the guy. there's something about having a big plan, and making it happen. sure he's had help, who hasn't. if he would have bought a cube, nobody would have said a thing. truth be told .the cube is a harder tank to run. TOTM .... that's a whole different story. that's not something that can be bought IMO. i actually think it's more responsable to hire a pro ,than to learn the hard way.

I could give 2 hoots about TOTM if I had a tank like that :) He's a rich dude who wants an insanely beautiful piece of living art, and he's gonna get it.

i think he is on the right track, he stated in the begining that he is on here to learn, and i commend him for hiring someone to help him get it going and the right way, i also like how he came on reef central to learn and get ideals, and share the entire process with us,

i plan on going to check it out sometime as well, so if anyone is down for a road trip sometime, maybe we can set something up with him.

Wow... I sense a bit of negativity. While I understand that he may not be the most experienced reefkeeper (unless you know him, you wouldn't know). Either way, his setup is IMO nicer than 80% of the ones I see online, even without a drop of water in it.

Most people don't believe me when I tell them that I've only been in the hobby for two years. Who cares how long he's been doing this? Lots of people said the same thing about ChingChai's tank, and now he is among the most respected aquarists. ;) Anywho, I'm glad some of you enjoyed it!
