Those of us that have been doing this for years know this, but until you decide to upgrade and buy all new holy****

I know many of you have gone higher and lower;

I'm in the process of upgrading my complete system, my situation is not typical, currently two homes so I'm putting a system in the new house before breaking down the old system and selling the other house.

I thought no big deal get a tank stand and tranfer everything..........yeah right. can't take skimmer, old tank needs it, can't take sump, still in use, can't take LR to cycle.....................So.......... here are the costs so far, this is really only to get people to realize, what you're getting into and start with the size you want, the upgrade costs.

custom tank 3300
re-inforcing flooring 500 ( did myself)
stand 650 (built my own, would have been 3000)
tunze w/controller 700
plumbing dosing pump 500 (could have gone cheaper but a remote setup)
Tanks for fish room 700 (anal want it functional and pretty :) )
Rocks 300
Skimmer 400
misc 400
Lights 1000, (not purchased) could be more if I go LED

Total 8450.00 with no water no corals ................. and not finished could probably drop an easy 2k more if I went with some of the equipment I see people use on here.

I'm just lucky the wife is fine with all this, but every night I think what the .....it's a fish tank why are you doing this, then I go home and see the other tank or see peoples on here and go, why aren't you done yet.

Anyway, do it right it's gonna cost............... It's an Expensive hobby

Oh, my old system probably cost more w/out a custom tank because I went cheap and had to spend two or three times to get the best setup, so don't cheap out it will cost your more in the long run.

X2 corals aint no joke. 90% of the money goes into growing coral, as a buddy of mine pointed out today....if and when I decide to cash out I am going to straight up trade everything for a old pickup truck or a nice 4 stroke dirt bike. lol :D I figure I will never make money on this, but trade wise, I will be sitting on something in the end hopefully. :D

You are completely correct that this is an expensive hobby, and we should be careful with what we spend our money on. But this is a hobby like no other. The enjoyment, and feeling of accomplishment when you look at your basketball sized condones that you grew from a small frag is like no other.

The ability to recreate an environment that until only recently was only available to nature itself is incredible.

If one is truly dedicated to the hobby, they will find a way to make every cent they can to put into reef keeping available.

+1 ^ I love showing my tank to new people, and to kids. It never gets old when I open the door to behind the tank and they see all my wiring and sump setup. Theyre faces just drop. haha.. I show it off like its my own child

Lol just had to lol :spin2: :D ....In all seriousness, yes it is an expensive investment.

My original plan was to give away most of the coral in my old tank but I am having a hard time letting them go.

Fishteen,

You said it all there, you have a way with words, what you said is exactly why the expense is worth every penny and every hour learning.

Yeah, let's just say I have about 2K in what I have now. I am planning on an upgrade to LED's(DIY which is about $700), two MP40WES($375 each more or less), and getting an Apex(full version $400-$500). I don't have all of my fish or corals yet so that just goes to show how expensive this is!

That being said; you need the desire and dedication/addiction otherwise your the one that is in and out in 6 months, I just hope I can stop someone from this and reinforce those that have the desire.

Years ago someone here called their tank "a multi-thousand dollar home for wayward corals". It was that day that I first added up how much I had wrapped up in my reef. I may have been better off not knowing even though I fully believe it is worth every penny.

I started off very well. Got my 120g acrylic with stand, canopy and 2 Reefstar halides on ebay for $ 195.00 !!! Had the tank polished by an acrylics shop for about $300.00 and reenforced and stained the stand and canopy myself. That was a great deal !! 2 yrs in and i have spent about $11,000.00 not counting running costs !!!!!!!! AND I consider myself a thrifty guy. Also, my tank is not even full yet :o So yes I'm going to have to agree. This hobby is very, very expensive. Beginners beware..lol.

On a side note, it's all relative though. Some folks spend fortunes on their set ups. We're talking 100s of thousands !!

Iv been in the Hobby for about a Month and I have spent $1500 so far and there is still more stuff I need. No livestock yet either haha. I love it so far though.

I totally agree this stuff is very expensive. Although I'm in the middle of a large reef build, I've spent about.... 32k in two weeks. Scary part is my tank is not even here yet. I am however buying equipment at the upper end, which I'm sure has a hefty markup in it. Ah well it's all worth it.....
