G Chiragra owners please

ooooooh, I definitely didn't know that!!! That might explain his prolonged absence.. (yes I still haven't seen him)

Really wishing I did a water change before he arrived, but I didn't know he was coming until the very VERY last minute so didnt have chance.

Come on Bruno, stop being such an unsociable git!!!

It will be a week tomorrow since I've had any clue that he's still alive!! It's so difficult to resist the temptation to go hunting for him!!

Whoopie, I think he may be alive!!

The rockwork door he made to seal his entrance has changed the last two mornings! It stayed exactly the same for over a week but definitely can see changes now.

IS it normal for them to come out at night and stayed hiding during the day?

I actually haven't seen my chiragra ever come out at night. He seals his hole in the evening around 1600-1700 and unseals around 0400-0500. If he had just sealed up (within 30 minutes), he may unseal his hole for food; I don't have a high bioload in my tanks so I feed my nass. snails every now and then before lights out. He somehow knows I'm feeding the snails and unseals and eats one or two of them before he seals back up.

For the first few days of receiving him (before he disappeared for a week) his door was open during the day and closed at night. I wonder if the house is too noisey for him during the day so he comes out when it's quieter, and I'm not peering into the tank all the time.?

It's been two weeks today that I got him... must be, therefore, over two weeks since he's eaten anything!!!!

I wouldn't worry about your mantis starving to death. I read on one of the older threads in this forum that a mantis can go for months without eating. You can ask the store that you bought the mantis from what they fed it. They develop certain tastes it seems. For example, the LFS I got mine from only fed him true crabs. For a little bit, he left all my snails and hermits alone and would only eat live crabs. After awhile he got used to other foods (nassarius snails, hermits, every now and then frozen crab when I don't have time to go buy or catch a crab).

I don't know about noise, as my house is pretty quiet. Try setting up a camera when you are away, like your desktop camera for your computer. You may see him come out =)

That's a bloody good idea, didn't think of using my webcam thanks hun.

THank you all for putting up with my panic for so long. Love having this forum to come freaking out to!

I would never dangle my cockle in a mantis tank! :D I have no experience with feeding bivalves to stomatopods but when I put a live crab in my mantis tank it takes him a while to notice it's in there. When I feed him a stinky piece of raw shrimp he comes out immediately. They must be able to smell it or detect it somehow. Hang in there you'll be stoked when it finally makes an appearance.

Heyoooooo!
My oerstedii is the same. Roy has said they do have good senses of smell. Try something stinky in front of a powerhead.

Nope nothing. Haven't set it up today as there haven't been any changes for two days so didn't think it would happen! Will keep an out out over the weekend and set the camera up when I go out. Need to delete some bits on my computer first, to make some room!!

will be two weeks on Monday :-(

Had Webcam up and running when I've gone out over the weekend and.... nothing!

although, I am seeing little bugs in my tank that I've never seen before. Not the usual little Amphipods. These guys are swimming around in sheltered areas away from the powerheads.. god knows what they are.

Aww, he'll come out eventually. And it will be all the sweeter when he does!

Do the little bugs have round black eyes? If so that may be a bad sign (cirolanid isopods). But highly unlikely as there are many types of isopods. Even if that is the case, if you don't keep any fish in the aquarium you should be good to go. Just don't stick your hand in the tank when the lights are out! :D

I did a google search and don't think it was one of those. They look like tiny baby mantis shrimp. I know they're not though.

It's 2150 (UK) lights are off... and I think I may have heard clicking (either that or my heater is packing in)

Sooo excited and really really hoping it was clicking from a Mantis and not a crab banging into a rock somewhere or something...

Webcam is on and filming any and all activity... fingers crossed!!
