Michael, there are other cameras that do just fine. What I specifically like about the G11 is that it shoots in RAW mode and has the capability for full manual control.
Aquarium lighting can be challenging. Being able to shoot in RAW mode and adjust the white balance during image processing is a big win.
I recently got the Panasonic FZ35, it is significantly cheaper than the G11 and also shoots in RAW, I recommend it. I got it for tank and bird photos so part of my decision was that it has an 18x zoom, but it still takes nice macro shots, and there is an add on to be able to take near 1:1 macro shots, which I may get in the future. I do not have experience with the G11 and can not give you advice on the differences between the two.
