Gabe's Tank Project

RMA Fest

RMA Fest

This week some of the equipment broke:

* Finnex 150 W digital heater: Bought in May for the quarantine tank, died after two months. The warranty is of only six months.

* BAK 2 PAK protein skimmer: Bought in September/09 for the quarantine tank, the shaft of the pump broke this week. Although it carries only a six-month warranty, the manufacturer said they will send me a new shaft at no cost.

* ViaAqua Poly-Reactor: Bought on 06/15/2010 for adding carbon to my quarantine tank, the pump didn't last a month!

The pump I am using for mixing salt water is looking like it is going to die soon as well.

Evolutions since my last post:

RMA:

* ViaAqua Poly-Reactor: Bought on 06/15/2010 for adding carbon to my quarantine tank, the pump didn't last a month! Update: received the new pump and it died as well. Replaced the broken pump with a MaxiJet 1200.

The pump I am using for mixing salt water is looking like it is going to die soon as well. Update: it was just a matter of cleaning. Disasembled, put all parts into a buck with vinegar and now it is working fine. The use of vinegar to clean fish tank parts was one of the best tips I got.

Broke/Needs maintenance:

One of the display tank powerheads isn't working anymore

Sqwid needs cleaning up, it is pushing water thru only one of its outputs, the problem is that there is no easy way to remove it from the system...

Upgraded:

Upgraded the maxijets from the quarantine tank with Koralia powerheads

Added timers and pumps for automatically dosing alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium

Parameters:

Finally alkalitiny is somewhat constant at 8-9 dKH, calcium finally above 400 ppm, and magnesium usually at 1,300 ppm, although this week it dropped to 1,200 ppm. Zero for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Livestock:

I've been having ups and downs with livestock, unfortunately more downs than ups:

* Anthias: Bought five, four died mysteriously, couldn't even find the bodies.

* Schooling banner fish (Heniochus): Bought two, they died.

* Sailfin tang: Developed a bit of ich, but recovered, it is fine now.

* Blue tang: Got a little bit of "white carpet", but it refused to collaborate, I couldn't net it to move to the quarantine tank, so it died.

* Firefish: Died

* Dragonet: Died (Vanished)

* Flame scalop: Died

* Anemone crab: Bought two, one "vanished" (may be alive, I can't find it), the other one is fine

* Bought also some cleaning shrimp, they are still alive

* Bought a new Clam and it is fine, though my old clam died

As for corals, some of the ones I bought got the "white band disease" and died. Unfortunately one of the corals introduced flatworms in my tank, now I have this other problem.

I am taking pictures of the corals as I buy them, here are some explanations:

The first very frags I bought, the bird's nest is fine, and it has a fast growth rate, the green acropora on the bottom right is doing fine, but the upper coral died (bleached):

From the batch below, the lettuce coral (center) presented white band disease, ditto for the brown montipora (upper left), and died. The orange scrolling montipora is doing fine. The other two corals are the same bird's nest and the green acropora of the previous picture.

And from the batch below, the coral on the lower right died (bleached), the other are doing fine, although one of the branches of the blue montipora (top) is bleaching as of today. I am keeping an eye on it.

I have more corals, but forgot to take pictures.

The evolution of the display tank can be seen below.

Updated 10/30/2010: Could fix today the powerhead that was not working. Tried to fix the scwd by cleaning it with vinegar, but it didn't work out. The problem is that Justin glued all pipes and didn't think that one day we might need to remove the scwd for some reason. So, after a trip to Home Depot to buy some PVC glue and joints, I will give it another shot.

Two strange animals showed up in my tank: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17857593

Sorry about this short delay. Below you will find pictures of my display tank taken today. I still have room for tons of corals. My main challenge right now is that me and my wife are discussing moving to a different city. Because of that, I've slowed down on adding more corals (except for the ones I got for free from our coral swap meeting).

Since my last report I had to replace the main pump and the sqwd. I also replaced all light bulbs five days ago. I now have a flatworm "problem", and the orange sponge that looks funny. I bought a sea urchin that managed to eat my small zoas.

Looks like your tank is maturing I hope you solve your Flatworm problem. Have you been using anything to try and cure it?

If you decide to break down you tank send me a PM although I think the tank has plenty of potential so you should stay and buy more corals! :)

Thanks, will do. I added a six-line wrasse and I am sucking the flatworms from time to time, this seems to have helped. I was thinking of using a product, but I read that these products are very bad on the fish and coral.

Hey Gabe you might try PMing Powderhound. He's located in tahoe and I met him at a swap I believe. He successfully got rid of worms in his tank so you can ask for details. From what I recall, he took out the corals, dipped them and treated the tank. Since you don't have very big colonies I'd say you should do that. Before addin the pricy corals.

Hi folks,

Me and my wife decided to move to Florida, and I will need to disassemble my setup. It will be impossible to setup up a new fish tank. "Everything must go." I am not setting a price on every little livestock or equipment, I will do "make me an offer" style. Please PM me if you are interested in any lifestock or equipment that I have. I am located in Reno, Lakeridge Springs region. Thank you.

Gabriel.
