I have two corcea clams now for about 3 months now. The only water parramater that is out of wack is elevated nitrates. One seems normal while the other seems to be gapping. Could this be just the nitrate problem or the start of someting worse? The clam responds normally and has always had its inlet open more so than the other clam but recently it is all the way open.

Ok what is the actual number on the nitrates....actually clams prefer some nitrates but not a super high amount though. Gapeing is comon among croceas much more that maximas...Oh what size is the clam? Placement in the tank? all your water parameters? System specification such as flow rates, and lights? and do you have any potental prediditation going on such as clam niping fish, butterflys, angels...and parasitas such as pyrmid snails....
