Garlic oil or Fresh Garlic?

Hi all,

I recently have had the first appaearance of ich in my tank. It came w. the two new comers - the clown tang and now a day or two later the foxface. it hasnt spread to the others yet.

I had posted about this in the new to the hobby forum, and friends there showed me good reads/links and some good advice.

At first, I'd like to give garlic a shot and keep my fingers crossed, hoping for the best.

I bought gelcaps filled w/ garlic oil (extract?). As I have read some people have done this - puncture the gelcap and mix the fluid w/ the pellets. So I have 2 questions regarding this -

a) how much should I mix w/ the pellets? like one or two or even more gelcaps? I have about 16-20 fish in there. I was battling cyano so we had cut back on the feeding a little bit, however at this point I am thinking about postponing that battle and focus on ich - a man's gotta pick his battles right?
(However, when I was feeding my fish, I noticed a film of oil on the surface of the water which seemed to have dispersed after a few hours. But made me worry I put too much of it in)

b) I've read that the active compound in garlic is secreeted (given off, sorry for my english) only when the clove is attacked (chopped, smashed). So does that mean the gelcaps are less useless?

Garlic will do nothing...
The fish need to be put in QT and treated with Hypo or Copper.
And then the display needs to remain fishless for 6-8 weeks.
There's no crossing fingers here.There's the right way and there's wrong way.

well... guess i'll go w/ the wrong way w/ good intentions.
the garlic has not been disproven scientifically, neither was it proven. however, until a new fish is infected im going w/ this method. i dont have a QT, or access to copper. it is real hard to catch the fish at this point, so unless i can't help it, i won't really try to catch them and cause more stressed.
